I know that adjusting to a new name is a serious undertaking for most people, but the common use of an individual's god name does not seem to be wide spread. Admittedly, my sample size is still relatively small, but most of the other gods I have met thus far have introduced themselves with their mortal names first, and then given their god name second. Is this because many have not yet adjusted to the new name, or are we not supposed to use our god names?

I'm making the adjustment myself, and I think it would be easier if I was a little more informed about what my relationship with my god name is meant to be. I, personally, am perfectly comfortable with dropping my old title in favor of Hermes, but if it's something meant for followers only, I can adjust my expectations accordingly.

i don't think my god likes being called by their god name very much. maybe it's just personal preference.

Why is that? What is it about your god's name that makes it undesirable?

If you like your god name better, you could use it. But I go by Deku because I chose it, and I don't think Aidos fits me that well.

[Deku is a name that carries a lot of meaning to him. He doesn't want to give it up just because somebody else says that his name is Aidos now. That's not something he chose.

And it's the name of a goddess.]

For some people, a name is more then just a word. Some of us prefer our mortal ones because it stands for more then that life. It can stand for what they did or what they see themselves as while the god name might be a little.... lesser in the face of that.

Not by importance to this whole system of why we are here, but to what we at our core is meant to be.

I have never defined who I am at my core by a single word. I feel my experiences and achievements speak more of who I am than what can be contained in a permanent name. I find it strange that you consider one part of a whole to be more important than anything else. I don't see how accepting a new name could change you so much.

mind you, it's not that i dislike my god name. it's quite lovely with foreign appeal! i just always gravitate towards the name i'm born and raised with, that's all. those who go by their birth names probably feel similarly as me ☆

I have never had a name that was permanent. I have had different names for different parts of my life, given to me by people of various importance. An individual is not stagnant, they're constantly growing and changing, pushing the limits of their abilities. I feel that my sense of self is not tied to any one instance or point in time.

And what's more, I want to be known for who I am today, and not for who I have been in the past. I want people to know me for who I have become, and what I have accomplished.

I intend no disrespect to those who feel as you do, it's just a way of thinking that I am not familiar with.

Where I come from, "Odin" is simply a name and belonged to a friend of mine. Besides, I assumed it was meant to be more of a title than my name.

They weren't particularly explicit with its purpose, were they? Where I am from, names and titles are frequently intertwined, and this is not the first time its caused confusion between myself and other.

It's sort of up to you. If you like your god name you can use it, but I keep feeling like it's not really mine, you know?

I was under the impression that we are the real gods. Reincarnations, sure, but that essence of the god resided in us the whole time, even if we were not aware of it. Why do you doubt that this is so?

You can keep using it, Saitama, it's not as if I am erasing it from my identity. I simply wished to know how I should proceed going forward.

Fuck that. Just because they say we're supposed to be this or that doesn't really make it true and playing along isn't gonna change who you really are either. [So maybe there's more to a person than just a name, she certainly won't deny that either, but you can put a pig in lipstick; it's still a pig. Or however that saying goes.]

And what if I want to be this? What if I don't consider it playing along so much as embracing my destiny? What if performing the duties of a god gives my life meaning and direction that it previously lacked?

I am not saying those who choose to cling to their past are wrong, I simply wish to understand why.

Oh, I have absolutely no problem using my god name. I suppose it depends on the person, of course, but I like to think of it as a code name. It makes it a little more fun.

I don't really consider the nature of my name to be a game.

I prefer to keep my godly name associated with godly duties. To reinforce the line separating work and home lives, if you will.

I don't think I have ever experienced a separation between my work life and my home life to be honest.

Use whatever you want, what's the difference. Shinkis don't use their vessels name at all, from what I've noticed here.

Of course they don't use their vessel name, that's how they get summoned in their vessel form. It's clearly meant to be a very special name that binds a shinki and their god together, you don't go around using something like that carelessly.

I don't really mind being called by my normal name or god name. I had a different name where I was before here. I like my normal name, but if someone wants to call me by my god name because someone has a similar name to mine, they can do that. I'll know who they're talking about.

That is one thing that has always confused me about common naming culture. The titles of my village may seem "redundant," but there has never been a case of someone having the same name. How do you keep track of each other if you all have the same name?
