Quick question. What does everyone consider picnic foods?

It doesn't have to be fancy, or even cooked, just something you yourself would bring to an occasion like that.

Also, no alcohol. This isn't for a romantic occasion. Though food cooked with alcohol is a-okay.

And you mean cold soup like borscht?

Well, whichever soup you prefer.

You could bring chilled noodles with toppings and pour broth over them when you're ready to eat, for example.

I actually don't like soup, but it's still a good idea.

What kind of toppings?

Blanched or pickled greens, corn kernels, pickled radish or ginger, fishcake, seasoned pork, hard-boiled eggs, fried shrimp...

It's a good way to make use of leftovers.

That all sounds damn good, and really close to what my mom once made. Except the fishcake.

See, my shinki eats a lot, so we never have leftovers.

Who is your shinki? I thought you used to have one of the "soulless" variety?

Urashima Kotetsu. Still got Mark, but hey, Urashima is a good kid. Plus, the cats adore him.

You wouldn't be the only one. I'm from about this era.

Why wouldn't we? He's a ray of fucking sunshine without being overly annoying, so I don't mind him. Plus, he doesn't mind helping around the temple.

My home is different enough from this that I'm not certain how the eras compare, although we may perhaps be a bit backwards by this world's standards.

Were the two of you matched by chance, or did he ask you for a name?

He literally showed up at my temple one morning.

In wealthy areas, certainly. We also have internal combustion engines, firearms, computers and television, and credit cards.

Then it's lucky you suit each other well.

So era wise that's def at least the early 80's, maybe 90's.

It's gotta be luck because I thought I'd be stuck with just Mark.

As I said, there are quite a few differences, among which are that those things are not new, merely rare and expensive.

I think it's just a different world. You don't have youkai here, either.

A youkai is a demon, right? Just a different name?

Some people call us that, but no. Youkai often have spiritual powers or abilities that would be considered unusual among humans, and we have some physical differences, but you might as well call us "elves" as "demons."

We're a different species.

Does that apply to everyone that's labeled a youkai? Or is that different between the worlds, too?

I wouldn't be surprised if it has a different meaning in every world. I haven't met many people who recognize my kind of youkai here, at least, and yet the word is the same.

I think if you were in my world, you'd be told you have a genetic mutation. They wouldn't even call you a youkai.

From an objective point of view, any trait is a mutation, isn't it? I'm no expert in the subject, but I can assure you there's a little more to being youkai than that.
