I haven't been here long but my god vanished before I ever got to meet him which makes me wonder: what the hell is a shinki good for? What are we supposed to do? Is there any point in serving a god if they can just vanish?

Shinki work together with gods to answer prayers and beat up ayakashi.
Still it's really irresponsible of your god to vanish without even meeting you first.
That's no way to treat a valuable employee.

Don't get too caught up in the idea of serving them. Maybe that's what it's like for the older gods and shinki, but we're passing through.

You can't read, can you? I asked what a shinki's purpose is, not for bullshit that I've seen counterexamples to already.

There most certainly is a point. We possess the power, when partnered with a god, to destroy ayakashi and thus, as trite as it sounds, save lives.

It's unfortunate that your first god vanished so soon, but that does not mean your next one will.

Shinki are just what the name says: we're a god's divine instrument. Other people have given good answers to your question, so I won't bother repeating them.

But for the record, you won't be able to draw a borderline or do any other abilities without a god-given name.
Basically now you're a spirit, and those tend to end up as ayakashi food.

You might want to reconsider teaming up with a god.

I don't really feel like I'm "serving" my god, though. He's my friend. And we help one another. He has certain abilities and I have others, so it's a partnership. I don't know if that helps at all.

This thing with serving sounds very unequal. I would be more happy if any shinki of mine saw themselves as my equal and as friend. Isn't that better? To be friends and partners, instead of master and servant?

From what I gathered though, a god can't kill an ayakashi on their own, so it's not like we're much use without your help.
