[What? He doesn't sleep!]

I haven't been here long but my god vanished before I ever got to meet him which makes me wonder: what the hell is a shinki good for? What are we supposed to do? Is there any point in serving a god if they can just vanish?

[ Yata just snorts. ]

And just when did this place do anything that made sense?

You've been here longer, you tell me.

Barely longer. And none of it has made sense. [ He's pretty sure, anyway. ] We're dead, but we don't remember who - or what - we were. We're handed over to gods without any say in the matter and they know about as much about how to do this as we do. At least some of them are good at picking up on how to use us faster than others. Getting used by Nami in a fight was pretty exhilarating, though.

How does that even work, anyway? We're humans. How does someone use us in a fight?

Hmm? [ Yata glances over at him at that. ] It has something to do with the name we get. When they call it, we... I don't know, change into a tool or a weapon for them to use. it's different for everyone, I guess.

What did you turn into?

[ Yata looks flustered for a moment, scratching at his cheek. ]

A skateboard. She got my speed from it - more than even I could manage normally.

A skateboard? How is that a weapon, though?

Well, we landed on one of the targets, so I guess like that. But she didn't need me to be a weapon, exactly. She had one she was decent with already. But she needed me with her because having a shinki allows her to rend ayakashi. It's... I don't know, an ability? A spell? it's the only thing that can kill 'em, though.

Huh.

[Interesting. He's quiet for a moment.]

There's some idiot saying back in their home, birds were smart enough to beat the humans in a war.

[ Yata blinks. And then blinks again. And then he picks up his head to shoot Saru a bewildered look. ]

What the fuck. Really?

[Once again, he tosses his phone so Misaki can read it.]

[ Yata catches it with better ease this time but scoffs as he does so. ]

You coulda just read it to me, idiot.

One: effort. Two: you need to read that for yourself. It's absurd.

[ Take that.

Then his lips quirk and he shoots Saru a smirk. ]

Maybe you should find a bird god.

Tch, a bird couldn't use a weapon.

Hey, shows what you know. Apparently somewhere out there they can conquer the human race!

[ And with that, he chucks the phone back at Saru. ]

[He catches it just fine.]

That's still the dumbest thing...

[ Yata just laughs and flops back over on his back again. ]

It's not so bad, you know.

Birds being smarter than humans isn't so bad?

[ Yata restrains the urge to throw his pillow at him again. Barely. ]

No. Being a shinki. Belonging to a god. Getting a name from them. All of that.

Tch, I wouldn't know. Maybe it's different for each person, anyway.

Maybe it is. Maybe it depends on the god you get. Although most of the shinki I talked to here liked it. Maybe I didn't know Nami all that long, but I could still tell she was a good god. I was... I dunno. Happy to be her shinki, I guess.
