[What? He doesn't sleep!]

I haven't been here long but my god vanished before I ever got to meet him which makes me wonder: what the hell is a shinki good for? What are we supposed to do? Is there any point in serving a god if they can just vanish?

[ It's late and Yata is trying to sleep but the light from Saru's phone keeps waking him up when he rolls over so around the fourth time this happens, he fists fingers in the edge of one of his pillows and throws it at the other guy sharing the room with him. ]

Don't you ever sleep?

[monkeyblue]

[Fushimi lets it hit him so he can throw it back]

I'm not tired.

[thevanguard]

[ Yata catches it with a grumble before rolling onto his back and tucking his arms behind his head and stretching with a tired yawn. ]

So you're, what, stalking the internet instead?

[monkeyblue]

I'm asking a question.

[A beat]

And looking up decent places to find the things I need to hack my phone.

[thevanguard]

[ That gets a snicker from him. ] I'm not even surprised.

[ But he does glance over a moment later, his expression curious. ]

What question?

[monkeyblue]

[Fushimi tosses his phone over so Yata can read it.]

That one.

[thevanguard]

[ Yata makes a noise of protest as he fumbles to catch it in the dark and then accidentally blinds himself with the light from the screen. He squints up at it until his eyes adjust enough to read it.

He makes a frustrated noise before tossing the phone back at Saru. ] Anyone can vanish. But we're supposed to help them fight. And do other things, too, I guess, but I was still learning about that part of it.

Why?

[thevanguard]

Why? [ Yata blinks, sounding confused. ] What do you mean why? It's why we were brought here. It's why they give us a name. They can't defeat the ayakashi without us and neither can we. Unless we want the damn things to overrun everywhere, we need each other I guess.

[monkeyblue]

If that were the case, we'd vanish when our gods did.

[thevanguard]

We didn't show up when our gods did either. [ Yata points this out because he knows for a fact Nami had been here for a while before he'd shown up. ] I don't think that's how it works.

[monkeyblue]

Why not? That'd make more sense.

[He is 100% playing devil's advocate. He doesn't actually care or anything, but he's bored.]

[thevanguard]

[ Yata just snorts. ]

And just when did this place do anything that made sense?

[monkeyblue]

You've been here longer, you tell me.

[thevanguard]

Barely longer. And none of it has made sense. [ He's pretty sure, anyway. ] We're dead, but we don't remember who - or what - we were. We're handed over to gods without any say in the matter and they know about as much about how to do this as we do. At least some of them are good at picking up on how to use us faster than others. Getting used by Nami in a fight was pretty exhilarating, though.

How does that even work, anyway? We're humans. How does someone use us in a fight?

[thevanguard]

Hmm? [ Yata glances over at him at that. ] It has something to do with the name we get. When they call it, we... I don't know, change into a tool or a weapon for them to use. it's different for everyone, I guess.

[monkeyblue]

What did you turn into?

[thevanguard]

[ Yata looks flustered for a moment, scratching at his cheek. ]

A skateboard. She got my speed from it - more than even I could manage normally.

[monkeyblue]

A skateboard? How is that a weapon, though?

[thevanguard]

Well, we landed on one of the targets, so I guess like that. But she didn't need me to be a weapon, exactly. She had one she was decent with already. But she needed me with her because having a shinki allows her to rend ayakashi. It's... I don't know, an ability? A spell? it's the only thing that can kill 'em, though.

[monkeyblue]

Huh.

[Interesting. He's quiet for a moment.]

There's some idiot saying back in their home, birds were smart enough to beat the humans in a war.

[thevanguard]

[ Yata blinks. And then blinks again. And then he picks up his head to shoot Saru a bewildered look. ]

What the fuck. Really?

[monkeyblue]

[Once again, he tosses his phone so Misaki can read it.]

[thevanguard]

[ Yata catches it with better ease this time but scoffs as he does so. ]

You coulda just read it to me, idiot.
