How would you define the word monster?


[A few recent conversations have gotten her thinking about certain things and she's genuinely curious about the answers she might get. Cardia is well aware that there are a few people who do know her secret and could probably guess that this is from her. But she's not brave enough to ask something like this without anonymity to hide behind.]

I've been trying to figure this out myself. If you had asked me when I first got here I would have had a clear answer, without a doubt. But now I don't know anymore. Can somebody be a monster and still be a good person, or are monsters always completely bad?

A monster is an aberration. Stray too far from what is natural and you will become monstrous.

That's a broad definition.
A lot of things are monsters in that case.

That's a tough question. I mean, if you say a monster's just anybody who's not human, aren't we all monsters? We're gods and ghosts, and shinki are supposed to be just a step away from ayakashi anyway.

I don't like thinking like that, though.

It just sounds too cruel. There's all different kinds of not human, so who's to say which kinds count?

Anything of unknown origin can be considered a 'monster'. Or something that can't be properly defined in words alone.

A monster is something that presents a danger to others simply by existing.
Something that brings misfortune to anyone who gets close to it.
Something that can never know warmth or love.
Something that should never have been born.

I'm getting many more answers than I expected.
I suppose whether they have physical bodies depends on the monster in question.

'Monster' is a word other people use to describe something or someone they don't understand. Sometimes that includes calling themselves 'monster', but in my experience it's only because someone else called them that first. No one deserves that.

So chances are any thing being called a monster may fall into the same category, just more often it happens with people.

Surely that person understands what they are.
