Hello everyone, I hope that I'm doing this right. I will admit, I'm still getting used to using this, so please be patient with me.

I was curious, for those who struggle with reading or writing here: do you have any tips? I feel like I'm slowly making progress, but it's frustrating when you can't read most of what you find in the library. I think I saw something about learning, but I may be mistaken.

Alternately, is there anyone who wants to put together small study groups for those of us who aren't as proficient with reading and writing in Japanese? Does something like that exist? If not, would anyone be interested?

A shinki by the name of Cho Hakkai has been doing lessons for Japanese for a while now, but recently an abandoned temple was renovated for use of study groups and teaching purposes for more than just Japanese.

Though I'm not sure if there are personal groups that've been put together, I think having them as well as the tutored lessons would be a good idea. I know I've always done better on my studies when I can go over what I've learned with others.

Cho Hakkai? I'm not sure that I've met this person before, so I would feel awkward simply asking for help. Are they a friend of yours perhaps? Maybe you could introduce me.

I agree! There is something to be said for teaching lessons in a classroom setting, but being able to have smaller groups to reinforce what is learned is important as well. I can't say for certain what works best for me, but I think any little bit would help.

Some of them kinda look like pictures. And they mean what they look like. But they get more complicated real quick.

I had noticed something to that effect, but I'm not sure that something like that translates to all characters. I have numbers, directions and very simple words, but not much beyond that.

What about you? How are your studies coming along? What methods are you using? Rout memorization? Repetition?

I've been learning from Hakkai. He holds classes a few times a week. I'm sure you could join us, if you wish.

Ah, another person suggesting this person. I would feel a little awkward simply asking him for classes, but I suppose having an invitation from one of his students might help with that.

Reading and writing is really hard sometimes when you're still learning. Especially the big words.

But I think there's a school somewhere here? Someone told me about it, but I forget where. I think Goten knows, though!

Big words are giving me trouble too, but we can do it! I believe in the both of us! Maybe we can study together sometime.

I'm sure there are dictionaries that can be of help to people studying it. Not rushing it so it gets stressful, and instead taking it at your own pace would be good right? And doing things with others is always fun, studying too.

I know it's already been mentioned but you could talk to Hakkai. He's a very nice person, so you don't have to worry about that. I doubt he'd have any problem with being asked about this.

Maybe, but I'm afraid that a dictionary might be a bit too advanced for me overall, unless in very specific circumstances. I want to be able to read and learn everything that I can, and having this roadblock in front of me is disheartening.

With so many people recommending I contact him, I may just. It feels a bit odd doing so without a formal introduction, but I may just throw caution to the wind and try anyhow.

If you ever need help, there are some tutoring courses at the school. However, if you feel more comfortable in a one-on-one interaction to learn without being in the school, then using some dictionaries or familiarizing yourself with the characters is also a good idea.

I'm not sure what style works best for me, but at this point I am willing to try anything. What would you suggest I do to familiarize myself with the characters? I don't have too much trouble with the basic alphabets anymore, but kanji has been a difficult endeavor to pick up. I'm not quite sure my brain works in that way yet.

Does it? I'll admit, I'm still trying to figure out how to use this. I'm still a little lost. Apparently I can take photos with it as well? I know I can send voice and video messages, but I haven't gotten a chance to really play around and see what does what.

I know this feeling all too well, sweetheart. Couldn't understand a bleeding thing when I first tried but over time, got a bit better. Still can't read much but I've had a bit of help with the harder words.

Course, a study group would actually be interesting! Fairly sure there was someone who tried to set up a school at some point. Best ask for them.

That's good to know that it gets better with time. The whole process has been discouraging at best, and I was beginning to worry that it might just be me. It's irritating to be sure, but at least it's doable.

Quite a few people have mentioned him, actually! It's hard to ignore a recommendation like that, although I'm not quite sure how to track him down to ask for his help.

I'm also learning from mister Hakkai myself!

Well, some kanji I've associate with the meaning. It's supposed to be based in old drawings, I've been told. So sometimes it's easy to see the original shape! For instance:

木 = It looks like a pine, so it's "tree"! And

森 = That's three little trees together, so it's a "forest"!

But the ones that aren't obvious are hard...

Oh, that makes a lot of sense! If only all kanji was that easy, I might not have such a hard time learning. But I hadn't realized that they were based on drawings. Thinking like that might be a good way to learn!

There are some books in most mortal libraries that are in other languages -- I can read the ones that are in English as well as the ones in Japanese, but I'm not sure what languages would be more natural for you.

It must be pretty frustrating not being able to read Japanese. I'm not exactly struggling, but if you want, I could try to teach you some of what I know?

I've had the most luck reading in English, but there are some words that I don't quite recognize. I imagine with time that shouldn't be a problem; I'm already proficient, so I imagine with a little self-study I should be up to speed in no time.

I take it that Japanese is your first language, then? I would be happy for the help, but I'm not sure what I can offer in return this time.
