Good afternoon, everyone. Please excuse my change of name: this is Cho Hakkai.

I appear to have reappeared. Although I don't want to give undue hope to anyone who's recently lost a god or shinki, I'd like to announce that my classes will be continuing as usual.

To those who were living upstairs at the school the past few days, I expect you to help me clean up the mess. You know who you are.

[There are animal cracker crumbs everywhere.

And apart from that he's just not going to mention the events of last few days. At least he wasn't an actual child, but....]

Does anyone have an idea what might have caused it? I'm certain I felt something in the air for a few hours before it happened.

[Chikusa looks as if someone dumped water on him: confused and blinking]

[She laughs and grins again] It is not so bad. Am good, ehh... [She pauses a moment, struggling to find the word, then seems to give up with a shake of her head]

Head? Will protect and take care of you and... Ken? [She assumes that's the actual name of the other boy] Never have to worry! [She's having fun with this, clearly]

[Way too much fun with this. Chikusa sighs, shoulders slumping.]

We're shinki.... The two of us are meant to do that for our god anyway.

[So they don't need to be part of a harem!]

[She taps her chin thoughtfully and for a moment it might look like she'll concede defeat, except--]

Is okay. Am willing to share!

[For a second, all he can do is stare blankly. They were kids, she's fucking with him, right?]

...What even happens from this whole thing, anyway.... [He'd say "arrangement" but he has a feeling big words would just make this more complicated.] I'm not moving out of my god's temple.

[Don't worry, she's not ACTUALLY serious. To her, y'all are babies.]

You will not become my shinki instead? [She pouts and then laughs.] No, no. It is fine. Loyalty is admirable, will not destroy that, suppose.

Will simply have to look harder. [A big, dramatic sigh.]

[Thank goodness. Something in his shoulders subtly goes relaxed- he's so glad he's not a part of anyone's harem.]

....Is it that kind of thing really that important...?

Is! [The response is immediate and sure] When of age, leave home and explore. Can join other clan or make own after, but it is important to have companion and to have children. But, big clans need strong mermaid to lead. More mates, stronger the mermaid.

[Oona's quiet a moment and then looks off with a feigned disinterest] ...Sorts of things not important to me anymore, of course.

Mmm.

[It's a mildly disbelieving noise, the kind that lets her know he doesn't really buy that just from her lack of honest conviction, but he doesn't really press further.]

Why? Is it a show of how strong a mermaid is that she can keep so many mates...?

Yes! Strong mermaid can provide for many mates and many children and keep them safe. Long ago, clans might steal mates for themselves, but it is not so much like that anymore.

Still, should be see as strong. And means there is lots of food to provide. Also, men will have long hair. Is one thing to have many mates, but if hair is short, means you can not protect them all from being grabbed, so they cut short to avoid it.

[Oona nods as if in agreement with herself.] Is why hair is so long, now. [Her child-self had sported short, bobbed hair as well] So long, but can protect self. Shows am not afraid of it being grabbed, because can fight.

[It's certainly strange logic, but it is a sort of logic, and Chikusa finds himself following it fairly well. There's an element of practicality, except, once you become powerful enough, practicality isn't too much of a concern anymore...]

So you'll keep your hair longer over having a lot of mates...?

[She's quiet a moment, trying to figure out how exactly to respond]

...Is just... game... [She mumbles, but that's not exactly an answer-or at least, it's not one that makes sense. She rests her cheek in her hand and looks off, feigning disinterest now]

I do not lie. Refuse to. [So she's mildly irritated when questions are asked that she doesn't particularly want to explain] I will not have mates. Is not a thing I can have anymore, will not allow self. So, will grow hair long and shove it in faces of everyone who will try to hurt me that they cannot, because I am not afraid anymore.

Hm... Maybe it only makes sense to me...

[Oh. He guesses he's hit something of a sore spot. Chikusa pauses for a moment, considering the words and his chin tucking down slightly against his chest as he does so.]

...Well. If I'm not your mate, I guess it doesn't concern me either way.
