If there's no mutual trust, it would be difficult to open up, in any way, to the other person.

It sounds like a complicated situation, to say the least.
But I'm not your friend, and your friend isn't me. Love is different for everyone--just because I have an opinion of it doesn't mean it's the only, or the right, opinion.
If she loves him, then she loves him. And trust isn't so cut and dry; it's possible to build trust with someone even if it wasn't initially there.
