- Chapter 1
- Chapter 2

[Not even cults can stop this romance novel from updating, thank you very much.]

It took nothing less than pulling rank, seniority, and actual threats to get Elio into the bathroom to do more than splash his face with a little water. Casimiro couldn't really say he enjoyed it although there was some satisfaction to winning. There wasn't much reason to stick around watching someone clean up. However, there also wasn't much reason to do anything else around his small apartment either. Anything else would just be more work. He could save that for the weekend. So he ended up inevitably drifting back to the bathroom where the door had been left open.

There was no need to be flustered or shy. Elio hadn't stripped for a full shower after all. He was simply kneeling on the ground with the detachable showerhead in one hand. Around his waist was where his uniform jacket hung limply. His head was bowed over the rim of the tub, water splattering against porcelain. One way or another, he seemed to hear Casimiro because he looked up with a twisted sulk on his face. "What, are you going to tell me that this isn't good enough either?"

"It's fine." Elio actually looked a little better with his hair wet like that instead of artificially slick. "Why did you even bother to use hair gel with it in the first place?" It had looked horrible. Elio clearly had to have picked that up.

The other man blinked at him. "That's what people do to look professional, right?"

"I didn't."

"What?!"

"Don't do that again. It looks horrible."

"You're not the superior of my hair!"

[After Elio finishes up cleaning up to be a little more suitable for returning to work, there's a small scene where he noses around Casimiro's apartment. Casimiro doesn't seem to see the point in it, with the narration explicitly stating that it's a plain and spartan place. It seems like the route back to the police headquarters will go by smoothly when their car passes by what looks like a crime scene in one of the smaller side streets, with a couple of other police vehicles nearby. Casimiro and Elio both get out to investigate it, and offer any assistance they can to one of the cops already there (who Casimiro notes as not being a part of the same unit). Their offer of help is refused, which Casimiro finds odd, and this is where the narration begins to explain more about his particular unit.]

[The Giallo Unit is one specifically meant for various shifters, and is filled with them all the way to the top- including Casimiro's superior Deacon Caputo. Casimiro notes that the "Giallo" title is more of a nickname given to them from other departments and the general public, calling back to the thriller-horror genre because of how mysterious and monstrous they're considered by regular people. Casimiro, in some internal narration, says that it's mildly annoying since everyone benefits from the Giallo Unit being in place.]

[According to the narration, due to their abilities when shifted and even enhanced senses when not, shifters in the police force are used as part bloodhounds for some, part snipers for others, and sometimes just SWAT-like muscle in other cases. They're used for emergency situations, such as bank robberies, and more difficult cases, such as murders, but also are expected to engage in regular patrol, especially when they're not on an active case. Casimiro gives the observation that this puts a lot more work on them, and they're expected to do well at it so that the overall public doesn't turn on them.]

[With all that exposition out of the way, Casimiro gets ready to leave....]

Well it was no problem to him if they didn't want his help. Even within the police were people who found it uncomfortable to be around shifters too much. Casimiro had raised his hand to the sunglasses perched on his face but let it swing down. He could go right back to headquarters like he had told dispatch with no issue. "Then we'll be leaving," he told the other officer plainly and turned away. It took him a second to realize that Elio wasn't immediately following. The other man was instead prowling around the edges of the scene. As he went to go get him, Casimiro noted he way he was scowling. "What is it?"

Elio's nostrils flared. "Something smells weird," he grumbled as he finally took mind of Casimiro. He at least began to follow him even though his shoulders were hunched. "I don't like it."

It figured that a canine shifter would be like that. Casimiro always thought they were a little more superstitious than most other shifters. "It's out of our department for now," he told him plainly as he went to the driver's side of his car. "Let's go."
