what's the best way to get a cat to stop following you around

it won't go even though i'm ignoring it

Don't cats generally like when people don't ask for their attention all the time more? So ignoring it would do the exact opposite of what you want it to do.

Unless it likes that too. But it'll let you know when it doesn't want attention any more.

Get someone it likes better to adopt it, maybe?

Trying is a good idea at least, good luck with it. But please take care of it until it has a new home.

Everyone who takes care of animals has done it for the first time at some point, though, so I don't think you need to worry too much about that.

Having people believe in you isn't necessarily the same thing as having them believe you to be something or other.
