[That's something they have in common. Under Hakkai's cheerful tone, there's perhaps a little too much stress on the approval.]

Good. It's always nice to hear of new gods who are willing to be sensible!

It's not a bad quality, no.

... You can always reassure her with the thought that, if she calls you and you don't want to fight, you'll likely sting her for it.

[Shinki may be at a god's mercy for their actions, but the gods are at a shinki's mercy for punishment.]

Oh, I'm sure. I meant "sting," though, not "beat."

... Has anyone explained to you about stinging?

[New shinki. Hakkai holds back a sigh: he had promised Yukine to help educate the newcomers. Learning about what a sting is might be one of the most important things they'll learn.]
reformedsinner: (as a matter of fact!)

[Hakkai's tone shades into helpfully neutral teacher-voice, not entirely deliberately.]

As shinki, we're meant to be our gods' moral compasses. That means, if we do something or are forced to do something that we feel guilty for -- that we feel is wrong -- we and our gods will both be affected with blight. It's painless for shinki, although you'll be able to see a mark, usually on your neck or back.

[Not that he's had plenty of opportunity to see where blight marks appear on a shinki's body, so far. Certainly not.]

For gods, it causes pain, which is why it's known as "stinging" your god.

[The teacher-voice brightens into full-on artificial cheer.] Mirrors are very helpful!

[--and, leaving that excessively cheerful tone aside, he'll sober again. Mirrors are very helpful, if you're not sure. He's started to recognize it in himself.]

It's much better if you don't. But there's one advantage, in that it means our gods can't use us against our will without hurting themselves too.

Of course. But it's something you can say to your god, if she is that concerned about using you against your will. Should she try to do so, she'll know.

It's not much of a safety measure for us, but I can live with being a learning experience.
