It seems that today is the day for grim announcements. I regretfully join the ranks of those reporting loss.

To those who care or may be concerned, my shinki Ekko is gone. I can no longer sense his presence, emotionally or spiritually, and his room has been left vacant. It's a bit less dramatic of an exit than those of the gods that have left, but I thought his friends would like to be informed.

I wouldn't.

I did enjoy the sass, I must admit. I'm not sure a month was enough time to teach him much of anything, but he was quick witted and clever. Anyone could see he had a lot of potential, and I could see him improving in leaps and bounds.

I was... proud of him.

Ah he sounds like a good lad. I seem ta have been bit by a teachin' bug too. I wouldn't mind helpin' young'uns learn the ropes (once I figure 'em out myself of course!).

Can't help but think that's something I used ta do.

Oh, it's not that I have a desire to teach or anything like that. But he was my responsibility, and I wasn't about to have a shinki that wasn't capable. Besides, training together would make us more efficient fighters. It simply seemed like the practical thing to do.

As for the ropes, there's information all over the BBS if you've the time to invest in searching. However, despite all we've been told, I can't shake the feeling that something's being left out.

Honestly? I think a lot is bein' left out. Like our memories? Why take 'em? Does that make us more docile? Pliable?

I dunno, it doesn't sit right. I'm fine bein' a Shinki. I like my god. We get along fine. I'd just like ta know how I know what I know an...

What I'm forgettin'. [Or who he is forgetting.]

Something about shinki not being able to accept their deaths if they knew, I believe.

So, yes, basically.

Wanting to know the past seems to be a common thread among the shinki. Or rather, the new ones. I think your inquisitiveness worries the older ones. It's going to get you in trouble, they think, which in turn will cause trouble for the rest of us. I'm not sure if that's true, or if it's just a matter of tradition, but I'm not worried. Whatever happens, I'm confident I can handle it.

Aye. I get the feelin' that's a kindness. But what about our loved ones? Our lives? All of that matters more to me than how it ended.

[He doesn't like causing a fuss, though, so the idea that the older Shinkis are feeling nervous makes him feel bad.]

I won't be rocking the boat, I promise. It's just an itch I can't scratch.

There's a possibility that if you're a good boy, work hard for your god, and eat all of your vegetables, you might be able to slowly regain your memories. You might even be able to regain a small item from your past! It's happened once or twice now. A number of us have gotten pets from home, myself included.

I don't mind if you rock the boat, personally. Rock it until it capsizes, for all I care. We might make the old gods nervous, but I suspect we're a symptom, rather than the disease. If you go back in the records, you'll notice Amaterasu claims no knowledge of how we got here, or why we sometimes disappear. Those who have died here have come back - sans a few memories, but they've come back all the same. A shinki who died even came back as a god, and now it seems that a god who has died has come back as a shinki.

I'm starting to think we shouldn't worry too much about the old gods, they don't seem to have much power over us, and they don't seem to want to have anything to do with us, either. I'd be more worried about whatever's pulling the strings and bringing people here.

Ye seem ta have an axe to grind, if ye don't mind me saying so? Have the old gods hurt ye or are ya just fed up with the situation as a whole?

I can't really blame ya on the latter. It's definitely a weird one that I wasn't prepared for!

Let's just say I consider the management to be incompetent. The old gods don't really interact with us, except for when they have a job for us to do. I am quite content to ignore them in return; however, I dislike it when they try to impress their ideals upon us, especially when there's vague threats made towards those that do not conform. I do not believe they have the power to act on those threats, so such posturing is not appreciated.

But someone somewhere does have power over the Heavens, and that weighs on my mind. I want to know the rules of their game. I want to know why.
