I'm Ginia, shinki to Chris and Ebisu. I found a new use for borderlines I want to share with everyone.
[Ginia, dressed in a black suit and wearing a dark green tie, smiles and waves at the camera before she begins signing. A calm alto voice provides voiceover.]
A few weeks ago, I found a journal in the library belonging to a shinki from a few centuries ago. They had a theory a borderline could fill a space in more than a vertical or horizontal configuration. It's easy for a shinki to block a hallway or window with a borderline, but what about something irregularly shaped and without damaging the space around it?
The author never figured out a practical application for the theory. They realized while the control in itself was impressive, it was rare a shinki would need to shield something to a specific shape when simply casting a borderline in front or behind the target would do.
However, borderlines don't only have to shield or cut. Studying the theory, I realized the motions were similar to my boyfriend's vessel ability. I decided to combine the two ideas into a healing spell.
[The camera angle cuts to an overhead angle. There's a person’s hand on the table, fresh cat scratches raking across the skin. Across from them, Ginia's left hand (identifiable by the red 発 on the back of her hand) drops into the halberd position for borderlines.]
Use the halberd position for borderlines and draw a line around the injury as close as possible. You want to focus on a borderline as you draw it out. You also have to draw a continuous line and this requires physical contact. This can work through clothing, but it’s better if you can see the injury to know the full shape.
[Ginia's fingers circle around the injury, a glowing line on skin left behind her fingers. She creates a closed circle and flicks her fingers toward the center of the circle as it’s completed, her right hand signing "Line!" The circle glows as it covers the scratches.]
Once you cast the borderline, you want to hold it and channel energy into it. You can feel when the spell is no longer healing, especially in the case of deeper injuries, but you can still maintain it. It's possible I don't have the skill yet for deeper injuries, but it could still prevent blood loss.
[Ginia releases the borderline. The glow disappears and the scratches are gone without a trace of a scar. The angle cuts back to a front view.]
The spell works on bruises, scrapes, first-degree burns, and cuts that aren't too deep. No luck with broken bones, though it'll ease the pain. It might work better on sprains. It does not work on blight and I can’t imagine it would do much for illness. It works on gods and shinki.
Thank you for your time. If you have any questions, I’ll answer as much as I can. I'll also help anyone who wants practice.
[A written transcript is included after the video.]
((ooc: For spell specifics, this is a healing spell for mild injuries (shallow cuts, bruises, light burns/blisters, sprains). This would not heal a broken bone or deep cut, but could stabilize/soothe the injury until someone with stronger healing magic could look at it. This will not treat blight or illness.
This is considered a Tier 1 shinki spell, don't forget to comment on the Shinki Spell page if your character wants to learn the spell! You don't have to comment here to learn the spell either.)

"Jitsumi, what are you doing?"
[Someone asks off camera as Ginia lights the whole mess on fire. The flour burns fast, alighting the paper and wood until there's a decent blaze burning. Exhaling, Ginia begins to whistle a song, signing along with the clear melody.]
Come, pillars of frost, crossbeams of crystalline ice, and girders of snow. Rafters of the falling rain, and thatch covering of dew!
[The fire dies down, flames weaker and weaker as Ginia repeats the song, dying out in a thin trickle of smoke.]

Kairi can only gasp and touch one hand to her mouth while she watches her phone in slight horror, mostly astonished by what she's seeing. ]

Ginia... you... wow...
[ Kairi'd never considered that, not by a long shot! ]

[The same voice shouts in the background. Ginia turns and waves sheepishly to someone off camera before turning back and shrugging.]
Trust me, I won't be left out.
[However, a busy kitchen is not the place to keep an extended conversation at. Ginia ends the video and when she replies, it's text again.]
I know song of warding lighting too, though I haven't had as much practice with that one. I was meaning to learn the song spells that let you cast fire or lightning, but I've been busy.

[ Kairi's genuinely excited for her friend. ]
I'm so happy for you! You've learned two song spells so quickly! Can we practice this new one you made first, and maybe then we can work on more songs together!
no subject
Sure thing. I'm curious to see how signing and whistling would work with other people singing the same song. Or you could try signing with it too? I bet you'd be able to do it.

[ She giggles to herself. She really does think well of Chikusa. He just surpassed her in spell skills, so she gets to tease him about it now. ]

That'll be short lived. He asked me to teach him so we've been slowly working through the foundation.

You're right about the will too, since overcoming another shinki's spell is all about that. Clashing Borderlines too.
no subject
Will, confidence, superiority, focus, I've been thinking a lot about those while trying to figure out this spell and spells in general. Waver helped me realize I was overthinking and forcing things too much. Since I learned how to refocus all my spells have felt stronger lately. I know I've gotten stronger over the months, but I didn't realize by how much either.

Do you think we should update the pamphlet with some of this information, or is it advanced enough that new shinki shouldn't worry too much about it?
no subject
Actually, Wendy and I are trying to put a magazine together, something that collects all the important information in a friendlier format. We could do an article all about spells in there? Because there's a lot of information that's easily missed. Like those questions the old shinki were asking a few training sessions back, about improving resilience in vessel form? I had no idea that was a thing and had to ask my temple about it. It's information more people should know about, but it's hard figuring out how to share it without dumping a ton of information on someone.
So maybe a magazine will come off a little more digestible. But we're not planning it as a replacement for the pamphlets!
no subject
You never know! The magazine format with enough pictures might actually be more engaging... even for people who don't know what phones and other modern technology are. It's still a bit of reading, but I wish you both the best of luck!
Depending on how soon you're looking at doing it, a special version that's aimed at new people - you know like a Holiday Edition - might be better than going to all the trouble of reprinting the pamphlets just for one sentence.
no subject
We're still trying to figure it out. The actual printing side of things I think we can handle pretty easily. There are a few small-scale print shops on the Near Shore that would work perfectly, and between Ebiusu's and hibiki's wealth, money is no object.
It's mostly finding the time to put articles together and making it look good in between everything that happens and personal duties.
Wrap? Or soon?
Wrapping in a comment or two sounds good!
Contact me when you want to meet for spell stuff, I'll make it work.
