Here's a thought: The Heavens and gods have worked in a certain way for beyond memory. Gods die and then they come back as younger versions of themselves, souls are gathered as shinki to aid them, and the ayakashi are set against them. There is a balanced rhythm to this place and how it all worked.

And then it didn't. Something happened, the balance was broken, the gods died and nothing came back. So what happened? A new way to fill in the missing pieces appeared. Us.

Now, I'm just theorizing out loud that this system is a mutation caused when a body, or The Heavens as it turns out, feels it's under attack and trying to keep itself alive and functioning. In order to do that, it has pushed to fill in the spots that it has lost too fast by doing the unthinkable - by grabbing people like us.

Does that mean there's an underlying sickness? A rot in the system that the pull of faith or belief is trying to heal through us? Or is this just an experiment to see if we are able to shore up the problems inside a collapsing system?

Any other theories, or am I just thinking too much on this?

Fewer people believe in the existence of gods or anything metaphysical nowadays. I didn't until about a year until I wound up here when I actually met one first-hand. Maybe it's related to that.

I suppose so, but it cannot help. Many have complained of being un-suited for the job, and maybe that could be more related to what I'd mentioned.

Regardless, I don't disagree that the system is broken in some way, but ascertaining how is -- understandably -- probably not something any of us are currently equipped to even do.

All is destined for death. From death comes new life. The gods cling to their old ways and in defiance of change.

I'd tentatively sign on the collapsing system theory. This world is just too modern, it's Age of Science, while Age of the Gods ended a long time ago.

The remnants clings to existence, because that's what we do.

Why not a positive counter-theory tho? The system collapsed and is now in process of rebuilding itself?

Perhaps those gods died and were simply gone for too long? And when people remembered thow to worship them again, the world had to fill a place somehow.

[ Did New Age movement and internet bring gods again? Who knows ]

Those whose names got forgotten are sure to stay dead, though.

I don't get it.

Everyone here gets godhood--GODHOOD--handed to them on a silver platter with the only catch being that they have to play errand boy from time to time and you're sitting here questioning it?

This is the opportunity of a lifetime! The chance to cut loose! To have all the power you could want! Why not relax and have a little fun?

...Maybe if this 'system' you talk about is a living thing or something.

Universal laws don't generally work that way.

If it's not a form of intentional meddling, that theory probably isn't far from the truth. With our current information, though, it's difficult to reach any solid conclusions. We don't know enough about this world's framework to pinpoint where the issue might lie.
