Here's a thought: The Heavens and gods have worked in a certain way for beyond memory. Gods die and then they come back as younger versions of themselves, souls are gathered as shinki to aid them, and the ayakashi are set against them. There is a balanced rhythm to this place and how it all worked.

And then it didn't. Something happened, the balance was broken, the gods died and nothing came back. So what happened? A new way to fill in the missing pieces appeared. Us.

Now, I'm just theorizing out loud that this system is a mutation caused when a body, or The Heavens as it turns out, feels it's under attack and trying to keep itself alive and functioning. In order to do that, it has pushed to fill in the spots that it has lost too fast by doing the unthinkable - by grabbing people like us.

Does that mean there's an underlying sickness? A rot in the system that the pull of faith or belief is trying to heal through us? Or is this just an experiment to see if we are able to shore up the problems inside a collapsing system?

Any other theories, or am I just thinking too much on this?

If that was the case, then there would be a lot less energy to draw in people to fill the old positions. You would also see a failing in the power of the older gods who would not have as much standing as they do. It's like the draining of a battery, not one side will retain all the power while the other side is drained. The energy moves from the full side to try to even out the power, it does not store up.

Now if the battery is damaged, say the casing is bent or wrapped, then the power grows uneven, and the energy fluctuates or flattens out entirely. That seems to be more the case here than actual rate of supply.

I suppose so, but it cannot help. Many have complained of being un-suited for the job, and maybe that could be more related to what I'd mentioned.

Regardless, I don't disagree that the system is broken in some way, but ascertaining how is -- understandably -- probably not something any of us are currently equipped to even do.

Maybe, maybe not. However, as a scientist, I find the lack of any cohesive research a bit lacking. After a year or so of such happenings, wouldn't it be worth their time to study and find a plausible way to figure out the changes?

It's not as easy to find the time as it seems around here. Aside from not *exactly* knowing where to start.

If it's important, you make time. If it isn't, you don't. As for where to start... I would have first looked into the deaths of the gods and the sudden random rebirths when they first started up. Which god went first? Which one was pushed into place? Look at the amount of people who sudden believe in those new gods.

Searching for records hasn't been the most conclusive. I could ask around for anyone who knows about what's happened since any of us started to arrive.

Assuming any of them are still here. The cycle for how long someone stays here... seems to be pretty short.

That is usually the case. It always makes for interesting discoveries in the long run, I've found.

That is another thing that should be looked at. Variations may lead to a new theory after all.

I've been here not quite a year. I've seen people come and go in that space of time. It's rather... bizarre. Statistically, though, I'm not sure how useful that information is.

Well, it may mean nothing in the long run, or it may mean everything. We don't know yet, not without first checking out all the variables.
