So, did anyone else run into the kid god on the volcano? I hear the Heavens have been claiming he was defeated, but me and a few others were there for that and "defeat" isn't the word I would have used. It looked a lot more like he sealed himself away or escaped.

We need to be prepared for the possibility of him coming back, but if anyone actually got him to talk instead of just retaliating, it'd be useful to have that information to work with. I get the impression nobody told him what he was going to be dealing with, but he definitely thinks us and the old gods are one and the same, so he's going to need convincing if any of you decided there was a misunderstanding.

[Or, as he doesn't really want to put it in case the Heavens are overseeing the conversation, in case anyone decided they want to protect him. Shun's been meaning to do this for a few days, but he's been given even more reason to be focusing on work in the last two, so why not use this to take his mind off things a bit.]

Him disappearing did stop the eruption, so they're not wrong about that part. They're just not telling the entire truth, because that would involve admitting this wasn't finished decisively, and they never do that if they can help it.

My attitude on how godhood works here is about the same as yours. I'm sick to death of hearing the ridiculous garbage about how "gods are always just", or being pushed to abandon the idea of being human for becoming like them and ceasing to care about anything that isn't the biggest picture imaginable. But unfortunately, they've decided I have status now, so I have to put up with that even more than most other people here.

I'm surprised status is something they even allow us to have.

But the hell with their shit. Somebody asked for a god, and they got me, so I'm going to be the best fucking god there's ever been. And considering that the previous batch of gods apparently built their thrones on smug superiority over nothing much, treating shinki like disposable napkins, and general horseshit, I don't think I'll even break a sweat surpassing them.

This one wasn't quite their choice. They give the "God of Fortune" title to anyone who reaches a certain size of following, as far as I can tell, so by their own rules they had to give it.

It's not a high bar to pass when it comes to the old gods. Most of the new gods give more of a damn about their followers and the disasters that have gone on here than the old ones, and do more about it.

Maybe new gods keep appearing 'cause the heavens just need a fucking overhaul that badly. Apparently the old blood isn't trying that hard to step up their game.

If enough people pray to you regularly, it increases your power, basically.

I'd guess it's someone trying to destabilise the Heavens if it wasn't for the fact that every enemy of them doesn't seem to differentiate between the old and new gods. The Heavens themselves certainly keep claiming ignorance.

Could still be someone trying to destabilize the heavens, and the heavens hauled us in as oblivious meatshields and/or cheap labor in putting a stop to them. But frankly that's assigning a level of competence and knowledge of the situation beyond what I've actually seen on display from any of them. It sounds like they just stand around wringing their hands and insisting on how little they know about anything until some new fire starts and they have to scramble to put it out, rinse and repeat.

You're not really wrong about what they've been doing. I imagine they're searching just on the basis that their hair-trigger sense of justice means they come down like a ton of bricks on anyone who dares to make them look more incompetent than they already make themselves look, but they've been utterly useless at it so far compared to even what the newcomers have managed.

Seriously? How the fuck does that work? Is there any way to see who our followers are, and where they're from? Because I gotta see this shit for myself.

Well, they can suck shit as hard as they want for all I care. Just means I'm going to out-god them all that much easier.

It's probably possible, but it wouldn't be easy or straightforward. You'd have to keep some kind of record of where your prayers are coming from or something like that.

It's always been like that, honestly. There's not a lot of people who've been around as long as I have, but basically all of us who have agree on that much.

I just want to know that our powers are actually coming from where they say they're coming from, because saying there's potentially big practicing groups of Nekhbet or Mars worshippers in the modern day sounds insane.

There's existing pantheons in the countries of origin of those other gods, too, so there's apparently enough worshippers of other ancient gods to sustain that as well.

We've mostly been organising our own systems and structures independently of what they offer us when we need to. A lot of us have tried swaying their opinions, but hundreds or thousands of years of something staying the same means the old gods are ridiculously set in their ways.

Well, they'd better fucking learn how to climb out of their ruts, because we're going to outnumber them soon enough. And the heavens can't be stuck catering to the ideas of a static, outdated, shrinking minority forever. Our way of doing things is going to become the MAIN way of doing things.

And asking a god to learn how to fucking cope isn't asking too much.

I'm guessing you haven't heard of the "eight million gods". Even if it's not literal, there's still a hell of a lot more of the old than there are of the new. Otherwise this wouldn't be such a problem in the first place.

However many of them there are, unless there's a crop of new old gods cropping up regularly - which there aren't, I'm guessing, because there's no such goddamn thing as a new old god - then current trends still aren't favoring them in the long run.

If you're planning to be here for a few hundred years to last out that long run, then it might pay off then. Though considering we lose a lot of our numbers within a few months of them arriving as well, it might end up being more like a few thousand.

And they do have their own newcomers, spirits enshrined as gods in this world. Old gods is the easier way to refer to those that are originally from this world, but don't take it literally.
