I don't think I'd mind becoming a god, but I don't know if I want to become a god. I think I'm better suited as a shinki. If I was meant to be a god, I'd be one now, right?

Hmm. Not necessarily, otherwise shinki wouldn't turn into gods and gods wouldn't turn into shinki, ever.
