[He makes a little hmm sound, perhaps a bit displeased, and reaches offscreen to grab a lighter and a tin of cigarettes.]

How dedicated are you to learning?

I'd do anything to be a better fighter.

[He's determined, the look in his eye says so.]

[Hijikata is quiet as he lights his cigarette and takes a slow drag from it, but his eyes don't stop searching Niles' expression, even when he does speak again.]

[He's seen that look before. Even if he doesn't know the man, he knows the feeling he's telegraphing as intimately as he's ever known any friend.]

What do you want to do, when you're stronger?

[The answer matters. He won't teach what he knows to just anyone for just any reason.]

I want to protect my god, my lord, my best friend with more than just my bow and arrows.

[He says without a hint of hesitation.]

He deserves better than a man who can only hide in the trees and fire arrows.

[He'll train under anyone to be better at this point. And if he has to beg, he would.]

[It's very small, but a smile tugs at the corners of Hijikata's lips, his mind going to the memory of Kondou -- his best friend, his commander, as much a brother to him as the brothers who raised him as a child.]

[A man he'd have traded his own life for without any hesitation. A man whose memory was enough to die for without regret.]

Come to my shrine some time, if that's the case, and I'll give you a chance. There's a training hall behind the living quarters.

Where is your shrine then?

[He's more than willing. There's so many offers, but he'd like to try and come now. Just to get things started.]

I'll be there this evening, if you're available.

In the hills overlooking the sea, at the top of a narrow stone path. When you're walking at the foot of the hills, you should be able to catch sight of a few wooden structures through the trees.

This evening works for me. I don't have pressing business at the moment.

[He can always postpone hunting for ayakashi for an hour or two.]

[He looks forward to it. Whoever this man is, there's a sense he's trustworthy. And god, Niles needs someone trustworthy now.]
