I fear betraying my own familiarity. It takes so little to do such a thing, and I am not sure I could approach them as a stranger might.

A difficult situation. Have you not spoken with them yet, then?

Not as of yet. In time, I will. Even had I desired anything of the sort, I could not avoid this person indefinitely, but I need to be sure that I will not be causing them any harm, first.

If it is not an impertinent question, have you experience with such a situation?

One approach might be to introduce yourself as a god or shinki and see how they react. If they seem to recognize you or be confused about why you'd be introducing yourself, if they return the introduction with their own god or shinki name, anything like that. Then you wouldn't have to show your hand enough to invoke too much risk.
