So a friend told me that shinki can go off on their own somehow. Like if their god doesn’t like them or something. But also that people get, like, upset about it for some reason.
[ Which doesn’t make sense to him at all. But maybe he’s being closed-minded about this. Either way, it doesn’t hurt to ask, right? ]
How does that happen? And why do people get upset?
Asking for a friend.

No one should be upset about that, although if you don't find a new god, you'll be helpless if anything happens to you, of course.

Oh... so I-- I mean he, the friend - should make sure he has a new god lined up first then? Just for safety's sake and stuff.
no subject
Tell your god to ask one of the older ones if they aren't sure yet how to release a shinki. I take it you're having problems?

What people disapprove of is "nora". Shinki who have more than one name on their body at a time. For example, if you asked your new god to name you before your previous god had released you, or if you kept both names going forward. That seems to be the controversial issue around here.
no subject
[ Would he say no? Probably not. But what if he did? Or just didn't reply... then that'd make things even more awkward. Aw, man... ]
So THAT'S what nora is! Why's that so controversial?
no subject
["Assistance" mostly means "intimidation" under these circumstances but hey. Sharak has Feelings about this.]
For some, it's an issue of loyalty. They see the relationship between shinki and god as exclusive, at least from the shinki's side of things. For others, it just doesn't sit right. But there are plenty among the newer gods and shinki who don't have a problem with it.

The names we bestowed upon our shinki were once held as badges of honor, a sign that you had been selected by a god. But I'm well aware times are changing. Not every shinki feels this way toward their god and not every god feels this way toward their shinki.
[ And it is a little sad to think things have gone down that road. ]

Demyx, who's your god? If there's something wrong, you should talk to them. Bad things happen when we resent our gods.
[She's seen it.]

I don't resent him! It's nothing like that!

People get upset because people get attached to their ideas of everyone having their proper place and staying in it. But no shinki is obligated to stay with a god who doesn't do anything to deserve their loyalty.
no subject
And a nora is what happens when they don't ask and do what they want, right?
no subject
If they don't ask, or if the god refuses to release them and they do it anyway. Shinki who switch gods, at least theoretically, aren't supposed to be stigmatized, but nora are often spoken of as if they're deceptive or treacherous. Divided loyalties are a heavy burden to bear, even with the best of reasons.
[He's a little slower to look down on them, especially since he's nora'd a shinki himself. Things aren't always as simple as you'd like them to be, and matters of loyalty and honor are deeply personal, so he's reluctant to really judge anyone who's trying their best with the situation they were thrown into.]
