[The camera shows a view of what appears to be one of the old, abandoned shrines that litter certain areas of the Far Shore. The post comes in the evening, as shown by the golden, slanting quality of the light filtering in through the trees.]

[The Medicine Seller is sitting on the roots of an old tree near an abandoned torii gate, with his legs politely crossed and his hands folded in his lap. His expression betrays nothing at all -- there's no hint of his usual small, secretive smile, but there's no fear, either, or sadness, or anger. There's just... nothing.]

I am afraid it would seem... that Hyacinthus, known to some as "Donut", no longer walks among us.

[One slim hand rises to brush against his sternum through the layers of clothes that he wears, against the spot where his name was before.]

And I am without a name.

[Which does put him in a position he hasn't been in before, until this point:]

[He has a choice, perhaps.]

I wish, if possible, to serve a god who hunts often for Ayakashi. If any such god should wish to name me before the Heavens choose on my behalf... the matter can be discussed.

[He bows politely to the camera, before the feed cuts out.]

I'm sorry you've lost your god. [He's certainly had plenty of experience the other way around.]

If you like to try working with me before making a decision, I can do that. I try to go ayakashi hunting most weeks.

I think perhaps I could do that.

Tell me first... what manner of god are you?

I patrol almost every day, and run into ayakashi pretty often. Someone who wants to get rid of them as much as I do wouldn't make for a bad partnership, though I do have another less experienced shinki as well.

There seem to have been a lot of disappearances recently, multiple people I know vanished last week.

How many shinki are you working with now? Only that one?

[The Medicine Seller still shows that same calm, emotionless face as he examines her image on the screen.]

Many of us hunt ayakashi. Have you asked yourself which purpose you'd like to serve, beyond that?

Would you be afraid to follow the path of revenge, war, and death?

Not "afraid", no.

But revenge and anger are treacherous paths. I doubt... that they would serve my purposes well.

You have my sympathies. I am without any but a soulless Shinki, but I am a new god and I have not had a chance to hunt Ayakashi.

It never crossed my mind to seek out a new god myself...

Is it servitude that you long for, or is it that you feel helpless without a god?

[Her voice is cold and dispassionate, but there is a hint of something troubled underneath. Without a god she had been more helpless, and the thought that it might happen again is hard to ignore.]

["Dispassionate" might describe his tone, as well, but there's not really any hint of underlying disquiet. He understands, of course, that his position isn't ideal, but it isn't particularly upsetting in any way.]

I am, of course, but a humble shinki. Created to be a weapon, in the hands of a god.

It simply seems... sensible, if I might, to choose a god who will wield me well and with purpose.

I feel bad offering after so many others have, but if all you need is a place to stay for the night, you're welcome at mine.

[He can't exactly say anything concrete about it, but the ears do look curious... similar enough. He has to wonder if this shinki is another kind of youkai, but he doesn't dare ask a shinki such a thing.]

[Pointed ears, markings on the face. The Medicine Seller finds his thoughts steered gently away from thinking too hard about that odd similarity, but it certainly does strike him.]

[The Medicine Seller knows he isn't supposed to bow to gods besides his own, but he doesn't have a god to disrespect right now, so he goes ahead and bows anyway.]

Such hospitality. I have, for the moment, found a place to rest... but if my situation persists, may I consider your offer ongoing?

[A shinki, then? If she were a god and cared, he imagines she'd make an offer of shelter or a name, instead of just giving her well-wishes.]

[She looks troubled. Perhaps it's upsetting to other shinki, to think of their gods vanishing? He bows to her, his expression calm and serene.]

That is, of course... my own hope. It seems several have been willing already to extend their aid.

[He recognizes the young-looking shinki, even from a fairly brief conversation. The one who'd seemed so mistrustful of his god, so incensed at the thought of him not being 'allowed' to use his own name before he'd realized he never really had one.]

That's true.

There's still a great deal to be done without him.

[Dying isn't a thought that bothers him, but leaving behind the work he feels called to do? Far more troublesome.]
