Say you hated a specific god. Maybe you only distrust them instead of hate them.

Then they die, and a reincarnation takes the god's place. Maybe it even looks like the same, but the old memories are gone.

Could you give that reincarnation a second chance in spite of your old feelings?

As someone who has recently taken up the mantle of a departed god, I can say from personal experience that I would appreciate being given a second chance.

I think I'd be willing to offer the same to anyone, too.

I had thought about your situation as well, Athena.
But the reincarnation before you was, if nothing else, a man... correct?
That seems to break a trend of similar personalities cleanly.

And I'm not sure our personalities are all that different. Judging by what I've found, he was as much a bibliophile as I am.

I've heard little but positive comments about the man. I have little doubt we'd differ on some matters of opinion but why judge someone I've never met based on information I do not have?

Because everyone else is judging you based on him, by the sounds of it.
'No second chances' it seems.

And that might bother me more if that hadn't been the story of my life up till now.

It won't mean much to you, but my family has history. There's not much more to it than that.

Yes, making a name for yourself does have that effect on one's descendants.
One thing I'll likely never have to worry about.
The reincarnation part is out of my control, of course.

And to explain so I don't sound totally egotistical, my father was considered insane for the better part of his forty year career. I'm used to people thinking I'm about to start wearing tin foil and hiding coins in my mattress.

Forty years, huh... Admirable if he was being called insane the whole time.
Tin foil hat must mean... scientist? academia?

Academia. Archaeology to be specific.

Now the hiding coins in a mattress makes a bit more sense at least.

[It doesn't, any more than the tinfoil hat joke makes sense to him, but it works as a deflection.]

You sound quite proud of this family history, insanity claims and all.

It's my legacy. Dad would've wanted me to cherish Grandfather's at the very least. And I suppose I'd be lying if I didn't want to prove all his detractors wrong. A daughter's lot in life, I suppose.

There's a lot to be said for pure and righteous vindictiveness, as far as I'm concerned.
Plenty of significant events have come about for just that reason - scientific and otherwise.

But does that answer your question? People can think what they will, I'll just prove them wrong or right, but what they think about me personally doesn't matter.

I suppose it does. It's an answer I hadn't considered, for sure.
It's a God's prerogative to make of this incarnation what they can, right? Ebb and flow with time.
