those of you who drink, what alcoholic beverages would you recommend? or not recommend?

Sake is the local specialty, and there are a number of decent brands.

Plum wine's not bad, if you can find a variety that's not too sweet.

Shochuu, when you want to get drunk quickly.

I'm pretty familiar with sake. haven't tried plum wine or shochuu yet, though.

Well, it depends on the situation. If you just want to get drunk, any beer will do the job cheaply enough.

But if you want to treat yourself, wine is the way to go. I'm not a fan of mixed drinks, but red wine isn't so pretentious as to break the wallet, yet still a step far enough above cheap beer that you don't have to feel sorry for yourself.

I'll take something that tastes decent over something that's cheap. Every beer I've tried so far has tasted terrible.

Last wine I tried was Auschlehen red wine-- not recommended. The taste was all right, but it didn't live up to the hype.

Most of it is produced in France... what do you usually want to drink? And what's the occasion? Will you be eating as well?

That is such a stupidly broad question. There's alcohol for all tastes - it depends on what you drink without alcohol in it already.

If you like sweet stuff, mixed drinks are good. Go for the stuff with fruit juice. You know, like a fuzzy navel, salty dog or Sex on the Beach.
