This is probably silly, but does anyone want to help me fold a thousand paper cranes? It's called a senbazuru and in Japanese culture, the legend goes if you fold a thousand cranes, you'll get a wish granted. Or good luck or happiness, depends on the source.

We're the wish granters and the happiness bringers in the legends, but it can't hurt if we make some good look for ourselves, right? At best, maybe some good fortune comes our way, at worst, we make something nice that proved we were here.

Here are directions if you don't know how to fold a paper crane. I'm also happy to teach how to fold them and/or meet up if people want to fold cranes together. (Fair warning, I'm not a great conversationalist.)

I'm going to see if the library will let me set up a small box to collect cranes at. Otherwise I'm happy to pickup cranes from people when I'm out.

I don't go in for that sort of frivolous optimism, but I suppose it's something to do with my hands, and I already know how to make cranes.

That's hardly rude, by my standards. I could've written a lot more about how I don't believe in wishes coming true or fortune and happiness that don't come from working for it, but I figured the point was that I was willing to help anyway. I might not believe in it, but clearly some people do.

Your standards are perhaps skewed. Coming in with a backhanded compliment and acting like you're doing a favor by helping out is unneeded.

And I am glad you have given directions on how to make them; it is something I have never done before.

They seem to be clear to me. But I may need extra parchment to work with; most of the documents I do use may not seem fit for this project. Is there any you would recommend?

I would look for 'origami paper.' They're sheets already cut to the right proportions and come in a variety of colors and patterns. Most anywhere that sells paper carries packs of them, as well as convenience stores and 100 yen shops.

I'm happy to drop some off at your temple too, I have plenty of paper.
