Him disappearing did stop the eruption, so they're not wrong about that part. They're just not telling the entire truth, because that would involve admitting this wasn't finished decisively, and they never do that if they can help it.
My attitude on how godhood works here is about the same as yours. I'm sick to death of hearing the ridiculous garbage about how "gods are always just", or being pushed to abandon the idea of being human for becoming like them and ceasing to care about anything that isn't the biggest picture imaginable. But unfortunately, they've decided I have status now, so I have to put up with that even more than most other people here.
