I know enough about summoning. Not enough to risk a guess what kind of spell was used here or how to break it.
All the facts suggest that our souls simply return to the world we come from without time passing between the moment we're taken from to the moment of our return.
Mind that I'm basing it on the knowledge that I have of quite similar summoning system from my world. You can summon soul into a prepared vessel that isn't the soul's original body. There also exists a possibility of summoning a said soul from a specific point of their timeline, be it from their past, present or the future.
What my theory is based on are several facts. First, some of gods that returned here after being shinki do remember a lot that happened after their supposed death. Second, the bodies we have here are vessels that adhere to the rules of this world, be it shinki memory loss or various abilities that both shinki and gods have, including shinki vessel form. The fact that shinki can regain some of their memories points to our souls not being native to this world, thus not being fully confined to its rules. Another fact is that both gods and shinki fall into a coma-like sleep, during which gods' souls return to their respective world. While shinki can't remember what exactly happens during that prolonged sleep, my guess is that their souls also return to their respective worlds as god's do, the only difference being lack of memories.
and what was that you said about about people going
into deep sleeps and then thinking they went back to their worlds? i
haven't heard of that happening to anyone.
yeah. i know at least one shinki who is getting very
specific memories back. like if he was going to go eat tempura and he got a
memory the night before that he was allergic to shrimp, things like that.
if shinki got back memories randomly it would be les suspicious.
so you think the memories are all in his head already
and he's just remembering them one at a time? i didn't think of that. it
should be pretty easy to test though.
how do you think? show him a lot of familiar things
and see if he remembers anything. i will just have to be careful not to
tell him that the stuff is supposed to be familiar.

[ That's a lot to take in. Gojyo's going to be thinking about this for some time to come. ]
when people in your world would summon souls from other times and places, what did you do with them? why did you summon them?

To aid the magi that summoned them, be it fighting or knowledge.
It's a bit similar to how shinki are to gods that name them, if you need a better comparision.

How? Our bodies still adhere to the rules of this world, that if shinki try to remember things on their own they turn into ayakashi.
