Is there a difference between wishes and prayers? If a god makes a wish here... does someone hear it somewhere and make it happen?

Because I want to make sure that if someone wants to get close to me, it's because they mean it instead of just having some frivolous idea of who I am or out of convenience. I don't trust people very much anymore.
