(The small Earl sits, perched on a stone bench, before a pool that is reflecting the stars like a mirror. It's difficult to not be transfixed by such a sight.)

I have never seen them so clearly. I did not think the sight from my manor dampened by unnecessary interference, but now I am proven wrong.

(He is quiet, letting his watchers soak in the beauty.)

Does anyone know where I might acquire a guard-dog? They needn't be fully trained, I suppose.

(If only Sebastian were here to train them! Actually if the demon was here, he wouldn't need one.)

[Like him, someone else is outside too. She's also watching the stars, but from her god's temple. Beneath a tree and attempting to make a flower crown she considers the question thoughtfully.]

Are we able to bring animals from the Near Shore into the Far Shore? I bet there are lots of cute puppies at animal shelters that need a good home.

I don't know, but animals do exist in some temples. (His isn't one of them, unfortunately.) I doubt we can interfere with the living like that.

Ah...I guess that is true, isn't it.

[She knows she's dead without any doubt. But sometimes it's difficult to think of herself as any different from the people back at the Near Shore. And animals so often notice them.]

You're worried about your temple's safety, then? It was pretty scary the other day when those cat ayakashi attacked. A dog would have been perfect for the situation!

(He doesn't consider himself dead, but since they are in heaven, it's an easier role to play. Or maybe it fits with his view of life and death better. Either way, he is a god(dess) and the humans below are living...for the time being.)

I would feel safer with an alert in place. The ayakashi come in many forms and a dog's senses are sharper than mine.

I've seen other animals here. Like goats. So dogs must be as well.

Then I welcome you. Are you a god or a shinki? (Not that it really matters. Both come with a host of complications.)

I had hoped. I have the time to train one if it is well-behaved enough to begin with. I don't wish to be knocked about.

Being a god isn't so bad. The view itself is a rather nice perk.

[ While the stars aren't as visible, it's the moon that's large and bright seen between the pillars of what looks to be her own temple's main hall. She thought to return Ciel the favor. Her view's pretty nice too anyway. ]

So why the sudden need for a dog? Are you feeling lonely?

I agree. (He can admire the simple pleasures. Art and beauty are ingrained in a noble's psyche from birth.) Is your deity drawn to the moon? Or an aspect of it?

(The last question is comical and he snorts faintly.) I would like one for protection. A dog can sound a loud alert.

My diety happens to be Hecate. The moon is just one of the things she's associated with.

[ And darkness and necromancy and witchcraft but let's not get ahead of ourselves. Especially when one has decided to make a somewhat good impression. ]

It's normal for a kid to be lonely when brought to an unfamiliar world all on his own. But I guess a guard dog is a pretty practical application. Shouldn't your shinki be in charge of your protection though?

[ So much for a good first impression... ]

My deity is connected to yours if the mythology is to be believed. (Her mother as a matter of fact. That...isn't strange at all.)

I have one soulless shinki and one who is...normal. Neither are particularly good at alerting me of danger.

(They can learn. He has to train them.)

You should probably get on with training your shinki to take better care of you. My soulless shinki is pretty hopeless. Relying on him to watch over me is looking to be a futile effort.

[ A sigh as she crosses her legs, resting her head on her hand. ]

I miss my butler.

(He is a small boy and he is not ready for children.)

Training takes time and effort. Besides, my temple is a large manor. Two guards is not nearly enough.

(He twitches at the mention, breathing in.)

[She scratches at her cheek uncertainly.] Umm, a-about the dog... I-I'm not a dog expert or anything, but, um... I hear german shepards are supposed to be really good at that!

(Well hello there. He is somewhat glad to see she has survived.) We have already been "sucked in" by them.

A German would serve my purposes well. (He misses Diedrich. That man would be useful.) Do you know where I might acquire one?

[She laughs a little despite herself] I suppose that's true. A-ah! I laughed without permission, I-I'm sorry... [Mikan shh.

She hums thoughtfully.] I-I don't know about in Japan, but Germany and the United States seem to have plenty of places that breed them. Um... If one of my classmates were here, h-he'd be of better help th-then me, I-I'm sorry...

[Though, to be fair, Gundam is also absolutely ridiculous to talk to so maybe it's for the better.] Th-they don't seem to be very p-popular in Japan, so... So you'd probably have to get them from somewhere else...

Why would you need permission to laugh? (She is a strange one. A past of abuse is likely, he presumes.) I doubt it. We are not near Japan or Germany for that matter. What dogs are present must do, though you are right: a German Shepherd would be my first choice.

(If only for the reminder of Diedrich.)

W-well, if it annoys you, and you get mad... [She trails off uncertainly.] I-I don't want to make anyone m-mad!

[She tilts her head thoughtfully] But, um.. We can teleport anywhere, r-right? If we're G-Gods? OH, but... I wonder if teleporting is hard on a dog...

I wonder if a dog would survive the journey. (He'd rather not test it.)

Uuu... [She squeezes her eyes shut and takes a few deep breaths. After a moment she seems to have calmed and she opens them again, smiling sheepishly.]

I-I'll do my best, so... Thank you very much for being kind to me!

You should expect nothing less from those around you. (It's hard to reinforce that point without being around her.) Anyone who is outright rude to you doesn't deserve your company.

But, hmm... [She hesitates, looking uncertain of how to explain.]

But... Good or bad, no one's doing anything to me here and I don't know how to feel. Hitting me, or burning me or anything like that... It's fine, I'm not afraid of violence or pain. But doing nothing at all--It's like they don't care about me at all, one way or another.

So I'm okay with people being mean to me, because... It means they care even if it's only to use me. So it's really fine. As long as people don't forget about me, as long as people acknowledge I exist... It's fine.

I got a whole lot'a dogs over at my temple iffen ya'd like to see how ya get along with 'em.
