How can one be animate without a soul? (He asks this far from his shinki - just in case they take offense.) I do not understand how they move; how they speak; how they serve? The essence of life is one's spirit, surely?

(Though he cannot speak for demons, of course.)

I am venturing onto esoteric grounds, I know, but what better place to make such inquiries? Besides, I do not know if I am entirely comfortable sharing my home with one who is soulless.

They probably don't have any emotions if all they ever done is serve gods. Have you tried to get to know them?

Though you have a point. Without a good relationship, battle will be difficult.

You need to have a shinki to battle. And if you can't battle, you won't make many followers.

...Which they are kind of right. It's easier to accomplish things with comrades around. [Too bad Emizel would still like to get strong enough so that he could do things by himself.]

Followers like to be protected, you are correct, and I am not against seeing them safe.

I suppose my argument is with the idea of them pushing us to follow a path that might not be in our best interests.

(He assumes the old gods are selfish until he has reason to think differently.)

I don't think it'll ever get to that. The humans probably don't even know what ayakashi are, but if they get eaten up by them...Or if we do, well, that's why having a way to fight them is important.

At least that's how I see it.

We are sitting ducks if we have no defense. This path I am willing to follow for the time being. The ayakashi are the immediate threat - there is no doubt on that point - but I think it would be wise to remember the bigger picture.

Those with the power to bring us here and set us on these tasks could turn on us. They have not earned our loyalty.
