How can one be animate without a soul? (He asks this far from his shinki - just in case they take offense.) I do not understand how they move; how they speak; how they serve? The essence of life is one's spirit, surely?

(Though he cannot speak for demons, of course.)

I am venturing onto esoteric grounds, I know, but what better place to make such inquiries? Besides, I do not know if I am entirely comfortable sharing my home with one who is soulless.

How can I ever trust a friend without a conscience? Or morals? (Alright, so maybe he shouldn't be judging.) Those are based in the soul, are they not? The soul is affected by our decisions in life.

Bit of a blank slate, they are. Morals are based on what you yourself do so they'll probably share the same morals you do in time. It's like training a dog, for lack of a better comparison!

Being honest though. Mad, is what it is. The paperwork behind this lot must be wild.

I don't find that terribly comforting. (He doesn't need another him. Been there, done that.) Was there ever any paperwork on the living dead? Or were they somehow outside of the system?

An anomaly's what they usually were. We're a thorough lot when it comes to reaping, mind. Can't let any soul get away lest we spend the rest of the week doing overtime to compensate.

The case with the deserter's nothing like this either. Noel's far from a mindless shambling corpse like those lot were. He's scared of ghosts, would you believe?

Some of you seem to abhor the idea of overtime and extra paperwork. (Not that he can disagree.)

There is a little too much irony in this "Heaven" for my tastes. Have you ever thought it might be a front for something else?

Most of us, mind. Mister Spears'n I don't fancy the notion. Dunno about him but I've other things to do than spend my free time at work.

But anyroad, I've been here oh, a year and then some now I'd wager and we've barely had any notion of who's responsible for taking us here. Could tell you one thing though. Seems the sod what's responsible isn't even in Japan to begin with. Least that's what they told us the last time there was a conclave.

How do you spend your free time? With other Reapers? I imagine befriending humans would be unfulfilling.

Does it matter what country they call home? If any? Gods should be able to move freely. Unless you believe the one in question is only pretending?

Wouldn't imagine a lad like you'd understand but I wouldn't say no to a nip at the local pub if I've the time. Humans make for fine conversation. We were one of them once, mind. Not that too far removed!

That's the thing though, innit? All this time, we'd thought the bloke was a local and we'd find him if we just looked hard enough. If he isn't here though, he could be anywhere. There's also the matter of how he's pulling this all off if he isn't here.

I understand drinking. (So they're not above humans, then; they are just separated from them.) I do not think you are removed at all except in your occupation and your powers. Do you feel the same as you did when you were wholly human?

Maybe he has an accomplice?

Bit odd but can't say, really. Easier to move round yeah but can't say there's been any glaring differences. Bit easier on the job though if we're to separate ourselves from most humanity though.

An accomplice could be possible! Though there really hasn't been much development on that front. Last conclave they held was ages ago. May, if I recall correctly.
