Do you think swords are boring? Someone told me that. I don't think its true. ( He sounds a little annoyed too but not too much. It's more like a kid whining than anything else. ) You know, there are a lot of different kinds of swords and that's really interesting!
For example, I use a wakizashi. It's short so it can't reach very far but that means I can move a lot easier in small places. I have to work harder to get close to my opponent but if I can do it and their weapon is too big, they won't be able to hit me very well. I think it's fun to see how close I can get.
I've also seen a sword that was a thousand years old! I think it was magic too but I don't know. Isn't that cool? There are a lot of different types of swords and even more styles so it's fun to learn about them.
( There's a bit of silence. He's thinking about what he just said. It's really cool, right? And not boring at all? )
Hey! Does anyone want to practice with me? It'll be fun. I'm pretty sharp, heh heh heh~
( And quietly, at the very end, there's a mutter, )
It'll be more fun than practicing math... ... Aaaah! I didn't mean to say that...!

[Seriously who could possibly think otherwise?]
And almost anything is more fun than math. Why would you wanna practice that?
audio
( swords are very cool )
And hmmm~ It's important? Someone else told me that.

[That statement reveals a lot about how Lann thinks. Or rather, doesn't think.]

[Text from: Lucina]
swordsmanship is a very good discipline to study and train in and the swords themselves are very important to how you fight
i dont know much about the particular makes of swords but my cousin is very knowledgeable about them and other weapons as well
it is anything but boring
text
( He isn't going to name names because he's not like that but... )
They're really cool! I'm really cool! Other weapons are really cool too but swords are my favorite.
[Text]
and since i know what you mean by cool in this sense i can say it too
swords really are cool

But I agree with you, training sounds much more fun than math.
text
It's not. ( It is. ) I just remembered it because I was going to practice.
Do you train too?

Just, you know, not with a sword.

Everyone can have their own opinions about swords. Even if you feel annoyed by it anyway.
text
( That people can have their opinions. )
That's why I was just asking what everyone else thought.
But you're a swordsman too?

Though a longsword against a wakizashi will be fun.]

Do you want to tell me what you're like? Or do you want it to be a surprise?

( Knives are even shorter than he is and arrows have their own disadvantages--range, limited use, a narrow target, higher skill... )
Is there nothing else in your world? What about spears? Or are they not very popular?

Still, I think you're onto something with different kinds of swords. It's one of a lot of things that sounds simple- a sharp and long piece of metal with a handle for you to hold. But even off the top of my head and what I've seen at Bishamon's temple, it's amazing how differently people have made that concept all over...
I imagine you could learn a lot about a person by the kind of sword they had, if you were knowledgeable about that kind of thing.
no subject
( For all of his talk about having fun, he really is a serious sword spirit, okay. )
But I think because it's so simple, anyone can learn if they practice with the right person. Have you ever thought about learning how to use a sword?

Aah! You're right! It really depends on what you're used to. I used to lose a lot when I practiced with regular swords. Then I got the one I have now and started practicing and I'm a lot better now!

But swords are not boring at all. Knives are easier to hide than swords are, though, and it's easier to carry more of them. A thousand year old sword is so old, it must be really well crafted to not break after that much time.
[ Now, please sate his curiosity. ]
How short is a wakizashi? What do those look like?
no subject
( EXCITING!!! It's always good to have more practice partners especially when he's on a quest to find people who won't send him flying into the air across the room... Or with some other worst than average injury. Seriously, why can't anyone here chill? )
Mmm, that's right. Wakizashi were really good for indoor fights because they're smaller but they're too big too hide so they're maybe not as good at hiding as knives... It's, hmm...
( He's trying to think. )
They can be between 30 and 60 centimeters, maybe? ( He's about right. ) Some of them are closer to katana size and those are called ō-wakizashi. The smaller ones are called kō-wakizashi-- that's what I am.

[Hijikata's on the veranda of his dojo; it looks like he's having a smoke break from his own training.]
I usually use a longer sword if I'm fighting in the open, but it's worth knowing how to make the best of a wakizashi's strengths in closer quarters. A swordsman who isn't adaptable is going to run into trouble sooner or later.
no subject
( he sounds really defensive. But he's nodding along, agreeing completely with Hijikata. )
You're a samurai, right? ( The dojo, being Hachiman, the sword... It's easy to guess. ) So you must have a wakizashi too.
