[ After settling in a new shinki and checking on Mikoto, Tatara takes a moment to himself to sit outside in the sunset and talk everything out. No video this time, friends -- he doesn’t feel like showing his face. And he has a valid reason for that. ]
Hello everyone. For those of you who might not know yet, Johan Andersen is gone. I went by his temple today to find it missing. From what I know, this means he’s gone home.
He was a dear friend of mine who will be sorely missed. He was--...
[ ...more than just that. And now, he’ll never know.
Tatara’s voice breaks a bit there, prompting a pause. But this isn’t a time for mourning, he reminds himself; he really should stop talking about Johan as though he’s lost when for all he knows, this is a happy affair. For all he knows, Johan got to go home -- back to his family, his friends, all those people who missed him dearly; perhaps even more than Tatara will. So after the noticeable pause for breath, an airy sort of chuckle follows. ]
I know wherever he is now, he’s happy.
[ That’s right -- wherever he is, I’m sure he’s just fine. ]
I took his shinki, Sakon, home to my temple. He’ll be with me from now on. I’ll keep him safe.
[ That’s the important part: Taking care of those left behind; those who are sad, (even if he is, too). He takes a breath, and even over audio only, one can practically visualize the forced smile he dons. ]
I guess that’s it! See? Everything works out in the end.
Somehow, it always does.

I'm...sure they would. [His voice is slightly unsteady.]
[It recovers when he continues, though.]
They don't seem to leave much behind. Except the memories, I guess...

Tatara swallows thickly at the sound of the voice on the line wavering slightly. Oh no... he's hurting, too... But is that any surprise, with the kind of person Johan was? Absolutely not. ]
We'll always have those to hold onto. Photos taken with our heart's shutter can never be forgotten.
[ A quiet sniffle, and then Tatara has to chuckle wryly to himself. Picture him, once called "cold-hearted" by his own family, now reduced to tears by the loss of a boy he really only barely knew. He must sound so silly... ]
So it's fine, really. Everything will work out somehow.
Will you be okay? Is there anything I can do for you?
no subject
Hah, that's a good way of putting it. [Even though he's a shinki and has already... Best not to mention that fact, though.]
No, that's... You're the one who sounds more upset. How about I turn that question back on you?
no subject
He won’t let that notion win out. He’s home, safe and warm, with Ruby and Amethyst Cat and Topaz Tiger and all his family. Kind, gentle Johan, who didn’t want to take a shinki when they first met because he didn’t want to know how they met their death, is home again. And that’s how their story ends.
Tatara can live with that. He’ll smile for this boy – this silly, sweet boy who had shown him nothing but kindness; whom he’d endeared to so quickly.
The company he’d kept, it seems, is a proper reflection of who Johan was, as well. And for that, too, Tatara can smile. ]
Sorry, sorry... [ A self-steadying breath. ] I don’t mean to make you worry. I’m fine, I promise.
Thank you, for taking the time to talk with me. Are you sure there’s nothing I can do to help you? You likely knew him better than I did...
[ Taking a wild guess there, honestly. ]
no subject
[He didn't know where Tonatiuh Temple was, for example.]
Don't sell yourself short.
[That insistence on doing something for someone else, though...] You're not...trying to to distract yourself with that question, are you? [So he assumes, since he does it to himself at times, albeit with a different emotion.]
Is there anyone else with you who knew him? [Talking about someone you miss isn't a bad way to do things, it's just...Fubuki can't.]
no subject
But it helps, somehow, to think he's not the only one affected; to redirect his thoughts to others. So yes, perhaps it is a distraction. And perhaps it's working, to a degree. ]
No. Nobody I know knew him.
How did the two of you meet?
no subject
We met when the temples around the world opened up...I just happened to bump into him. [And that's all he can safely say; he can't allow himself to remember what happened there without his curiosity taking over.]
Minerva, right? How about you?
no subject
Funny, we met around the same time. He approached me out of nowhere, told me he was new. He didn’t even have a shinki yet, back then.
[ Things happened so quickly from there, come to think of it. Looking back on it now makes it all seem like a whirlwind. ]
Minerva, yes. [ There’s an airy sound that smacks of faint sheepishness. ] My name is Tatara Totsuka. You can call me by either; there’s no need to be formal.
And you are...?
no subject
I'm Fubuki. Nice to meet you, even under these circumstances...
[There's a blank pause, like he'd turned the phone away for a second.]
I'm sorry...I have to switch to texting.
[A minute later—]
If you need to talk to someone about him, I'll listen.
text;
I won't keep you. Please let me know if there's anything you need, okay?
Thank you for listening. I hope we can talk again someday!
no subject
[What was that last part supposed to mean? Even he doesn't know, but it sounds about right. Maybe it's because he says it to his own god.]
See you again.
