Shinki and gods: I, the Valkyrie, open the temple of Osiris to those of you who wish to train in combat.

Battle against the ayakashi is a service gods and shinki alone can offer the mortal world. Though mortals voice prayers for all manner of things, they have the strength within them to improve their own lot -- to vanquish their personal demons, to overcome their obstacles, to deal with their fellow man. Divine aid in these cases is a boon, not a necessity. Not so with the ayakashi, who as we know can only be truly defeated when god and shinki align their strengths.

Therefore your duty must be to defeat these enemies. As most of you gained your position here through arbitrary assignation, many of you lack the ability to fight, and thus your ability to perform that task. I shall rectify that, should you wish to fulfill your duty.

You need not thank me, it is simply how it is. I am a goddess of fate, not choice.

So do you control fate or do you just guard over it and make sure it goes according to whatever fate wants?

The choices one makes in life determines one's fate. The Valkyrie is the means by which that fate is made manifest -- whether the deceased mortal is granted a place in Asgard, or sent to Niflheim.

What's the difference?

In Valhalla one stands among the gods -- one becomes a god, doing battle by day and drinking mead at night, till at last the time comes to stand and battle against Ragnarok. Hel's domain is ice and cold, ruled over by the cruel goddess whose attentions are indifferent at best and harsh at worst.

Okay, so there's a huge difference. I suppose this isn't much different from Valhalla though. Mostly what I do is drink and fight. Oh and cook. Also there was that sleepover.

It is not quite the same, but I believe there are many similarities worth noting.
