Is it weird that parts of this feel normal and parts of this feel like a simulation? It's strange and I get uncomfortable thinking about why some things seem really off without me being able to pin point why they are off. Also, realizing I died in what are probably my early 20's sucks.

So on to a more important question! What do shinki do for fun around here? I know there's cooking, cute goddesses and wine but I'm feeling a little boxed in by the weirdness of it all and could use a few more distractions.

[Shuusei doesn't see this guy explaining his look, so he lets it slide for the moment.

Looking around at the crowd he shrugs, having nothing to compare these "borderlines" to.]

I'm still new to the area so if you know a good place to teach this I'm game. If it ends up being a dark alley though I might start questioning you.

[His tone is joking though. For meeting a stranger and talking about magic, Shuusei seems pretty laid back about it.]

If some shinki came up to me and said they died in some amazing way, I'd probably laugh at them. Why bother lying when every already knows you are?

And I don't even know what type of person I am yet. I have to figure that out when I'm not trying to figure out how to do what it is they brought me here to do.

[She goes quiet for a second, because, uh.] ... Or...

[On second thought, she probably shouldn't say anything at all.] That's, you know, the sort of thing that's pointless to speculate about. You're here now, all that matters now is the future.

[Speaking of burning, though.]

Did I ever tell you what I could do now? I can warm things up, it's my god power or whatever. Just don't use me as a space heater and we're good.

[Why yes, that was an attempt to change the subject.]

Ha ha, don't worry, I promise to send you home in one piece!

[He affects a thoughtful expression, tapping one clawed finger against his chin.] Unless you make a mistake with your line and catch a toe in it, of course.

How about over there?

[He points to a grassy area at the edge of the park that's currently empty of strollers and picnickers, and suits his action to his words, heading for it at a brisk walk.]

[He falls in line with the change of subject pretty readily. Though he might joke about his death, he doesn't actually think too hard on it. Shuusei just assumes he's the type of guy who doesn't like things quite that morbid.]

Future huh?

[But hey, human space heater!]

That sounds like a useful talent, Rei-chan. Do people pray to you for warm winters?

So two other goddesses claimed you? Did they give you a choice?

[He's still trying to reconcile the ongoing issue that is a god doing it against a shinki's will. He's still not sure how that actually all works.]

What happens if I catch a toe in it?

[Okay, that's ominous from the monster-like teacher. Still, Shuusei follows along because he's curious. He wants to know how this works.]

[Judiciously, he frowns, and adds:] Most likely.

[He hasn't actually used a borderline against another shinki, and besides, he doesn't want to scare Shuusei too much. The young man doesn't seem to have been scared off, though, so Hakkai pauses in the center of the empty area of grass, holds up one hand to stop Shuusei, and after a few seconds slashes the hand down with his first two fingers outstretched.]

Line!

[A barrier flashes up from the line on the ground his fingers describe, sizzling in the air like a living thing. Hakkai holds it in place and offers a polite nod to Shuusei.]

If you'd like to look at it...?

[This was not the brightest idea she's ever had.]

Haven't looked at the prayers in forever, so hell if I know. If you're interested in that kinda thing, you're welcome to sort 'em out.

[She did see one wishing for the end of the world one day...]

People pray for some weird stuff.

It was more like the other way around, really. I found 'em in trouble without their shinki to help 'em out and asked for a name.

I didn't say to tell them you did, just to act like you did. If you don't remember your past, no one can tell you you're wrong.

Trying out a bunch of different attitudes is one good way to figure out which is the most comfortable, anyway.

That's not a bad plan at all, just trying a bunch of new things. It must be exciting too!

I'm glad that worked out for you! Especially since cooking is pretty much a universal skill, I think? Everyone needs to eat!

[Oh yeah, Shuusei's definitely feeling so much better about this. At least he's alert enough to stop when instructed.

Then the waving of fingers happens and a barrier appears in front of him. Hesitantly, because of all the talk of losing limbs and unknown possibilities, Shuusei reaches out and touches the barrier to see if it'll hurt. He marvels at it though because this is some weird stuff right here.]

Magic..?

Reika-san still sounds too formal, how about Hane-chan?

[He's not even sure if he's teasing or if it's just a comfort thing.]

I might see what it is people actually ask for. Maybe it'll be something simple I can manage to pass the time.

That's noble. You some sort of big damn hero or something?

[He doesn't mean it to be as insulting as it seems in text. Something about this all bugs him though.]

I'm just going to stick to winging it when it comes to that sort of thing. What I really want to know is what's fun around here.

And here I thought being able to cook well would be something cool. I really need to find something special though.

Nah, I just got lucky. Right place at the right time. But I'm not the kinda guy who can just walk on by when he sees a girl who needs help, either.

If you can't call me by name, then I don't know about the prayers. Might be too hard for you.

[The barrier sizzles against Shuusei's fingertips; it resists his pressure, but it's painless to touch.]

I didn't mean that it wasn't cool! I just meant that everyone would be able to appreciate it, since everyone has to eat.

Like... if my specialty was making dresses, there would be a whole bunch of people who just can't take advantage of that, no matter how good I am.

Yeah, sure. Now I just have to get the equipment.

That's good to know. I guess I'll just wait and see what kind of guy I really am when the time comes.
