I've been looking into basic information on shinki, now that it seems things have quieted down.

[Although, "quieted down" might be a relative term, honestly.]

There was a very informative, though brief, outline I saw here that had been posted some time ago. However, I have some questions of my own, mostly concerning the spells shinki use, social constructs, and physiological differences.

Other than that, there is a general question I'd like to ask. I'm interested to know what constitutes as holy water here? I suppose another way to put it is if it's possible to 'create' it.

If you attend Lady Minerva's school at her temple, I personally teach Shinki techniques. With shinki techniques, you would be able to cast borderlines, cast some low level spells and use songs to help defend you and your God.

As for basic shinki etiquette and history I will be making a post myself to delve into that detail, since I find it troubling that not many get to understand how important it is for both sides.

Is there a schedule in her school that I can take a look at for when you'll be teaching? My own spells are sufficient for the time being, but I don't want to risk it.

That would be greatly appreciated. I'll be sure to take a look when you do, and direct the god I'm with to it as well. However, I take it that this isn't exactly the norm?

Here is a link to all the different classes being taught at Lady Minerva's temple. My classes are only once a week and for an hour, but if you really need additional help I can assist in off temple training. Normally with newly formed shinki there are previous shinkis to help assist their gods, or gods themselves to help the shinkis. it is highly unusual for there to be newly formed gods and shinkis.

It's mostly general questions, such as what spells can be used, how to use them, how shinki and gods are expected to behave, and other things like that. I imagine that there's a cultural difference in general based on the shinki-god relationships.

I don't suppose you have answers to those questions?

And I primarily do water and healing.

You mean, other than not to step on any toes and potentially make an enemy within the first week of being here?

Come on, if you don't make any enemies in your first week you're just not trying hard enough.

I'd rather not when I don't have enough information or experience with being a shinki. Aside from that, there might not be a reason to go out and actively make myself an antagonist, especially when luck might decide to make that enemy a powerful person or group of people.

Anybody given you any suggestions about etiquette yet?

Not yet. However, someone named Kazuma said that he was going to make his own post to better detail the relationships between shinki and gods. I'd keep a lookout for that. It seems that he's been a shinki for quite some time.

It appears that way. He said that 'newly formed' gods and shinki is unusual. Gods teaching new shinki apparently is within the norm, but gods being newly formed along with shinki is outside of it.

You know I'm not all that surprised. Gods don't seem like they ought to pop up out of nowhere.

There's this kind of permanence about the word, you know.

That's true enough, though I haven't thought about it in quite that way. There's certainly an implication that an immortal being should have some kind of permanence. The idea that one could be 'replaced' isn't exactly a comfortable feeling.

I bet it's a whole lot less comfortable for them than it is for us.

What happens to a shinki whose god goes poof, though, anyway?

Certainly, especially for the ones who've been here since the beginning.

I have two possible theories for that, but I don't know which one is correct and I might be entirely wrong anyway.

1. The god's death will mean the shinki is no longer bound to them, and so is free to look for another god willing to take them on.

2. The shinki remains bound to that god, which may imply a cycle of rebirth and inheritance of shinki for gods.

However, that's a very good question that I'd like to know the definitive answer to myself. Given that the rules have suddenly changed, I would think that this might affect the rules of how death applies to gods and shinki.

3. The shinki hasn't got anything to force them to stick around, so they move on into the light.

You might be right about the rules being as weird for us as the rest of this, though. Beats me.

That's certainly something to consider, too, if the shinki's existence is tied to the god's.

Personally, I wouldn't want to find out for the sake of knowledge, and neither would I ask others to do that. I'd rather just be careful.

You and me both. I like being alive myself. Who knows? Maybe we'll find out if a god gets himself offed.

If we're lucky, that won't happen. Still, it's a shinki's job to protect their deity, right?

Then even if a god died, it'd have to be looked at on a case-by-case basis. After all, it's entirely possible that the shinki was loyal enough to that god to give up their life in order to try saving theirs.

Then I guess we'll have to hope a god with a coward shinki gets offed.

I am not quite familiar with the way things work here, but back at home, all you had to do is request for a religious figure to bless whatever you are trying to use. If that theory is right then all you have to do is to get your God to bless it? There might be some red tape behind it though.

Interesting. I wonder if it'd work the same way if the shinki is also considered divinity.

What's the point in creating it when there's a shrine behind every convenience store?

Water is my element. I can channel mana to manipulate and conjure it. It might be useful to know if I can make it while out in the field where there's no shrine or spring of holy water conveniently nearby.

Well here I was all ready to make fun of you and you go and say something smart. [Serious Shepard would never fault someone for that kind of preparation.] I'd be interested if you figure it out.

We can take a bottle or two from the existing springs while we're out, at least. The only problem is that it's a finite resource no matter how you look at it. So, I'll see what I can do and give out that information when I know.

Yeah we figured that one out pretty fast. Whatever's supplying the springs must come from somewhere though. Japanese culture isn't really my strong suit no matter how many bowls of ramen I've put away over the years. I don't suppose it's any better for you?

Sadly, no. I've never even heard of "Japan" until I arrived here. At least, I don't think I have.

I do agree that there should be a source. It might be beyond my ability to trace it back, though I could give it a shot.
