Looking for part time work? Interested in assisting with prayers across Japan? The God of Fortune, Ebisu, is hiring for multiple positions at his temple. Applicants with skills and/or knowledge in office support, customer service, technical support, languages, agriculture, manufacturing, and fishing are highly welcome, though all skill levels are welcome to apply.

Hours are flexible, pay starts at 4000 yen/hour. Higher rates can be negotiated depending on skills/knowledge. No naming required. Additional benefits include on-site meals, travel options across Japan, and training in shinki spells.

Speaking more candidly, any help is welcome. Even if you can only spare a few hours you will be properly compensated for your time and do a great service to the temple. The majority of work is office-based, but there are plenty of field opportunities too.

I definitely understand though. I keep seeing all these events or shows I can't go to because I'm busy working. I feel a little bad I get out more than most of my coworkers, but they keep telling me it's fine, that I'm young and I should enjoy things.

It's kinda weird considering how old some of the shinki there are? Like hundred or thousands of years old, but they look twenty or thirty or whatever.

... You kind of get used to stuff like that. I've known people that are thousands of years old. Most of them were my enemies, but heck, even Elfnein carries the memories of someone centuries old.

I have so many questions about your world if people thousands of years old is not unusual.

Oh, it's still unusual. It's just after the third or fourth time you stop being surprised by it.

That feels like two or three times too many???

Are you actually several centuries old?

No, I'm seventeen.

If I were thousands of years old I'd be a lot more angry and difficult to deal with than I already am.

A thousand years could make you pretty mellow too. There are some shinki at the temple that are incredibly chill. It's impressive.

That said, anger isn't bad, and you're not difficult to deal with.

No, I'm pretty sure the world would make me too annoyed to be mellow at this point.

But you should have seen me over a year ago. I was a holy terror.

Ginia, it's time I told you about all this. I was... used by someone, and people lost their lives as a result. I told myself all sorts of lies to justify my actions, but none of them justified anything I did.

I can't undo a lot of that, but I can work as much as I can to make up for it.

[With memories, Ginia would be able to relate fully. She knows what it's like to be used by others, to be responsible for lives, to know there's nothing to justify your actions, to atone.

Ginia's mood levels out. There's sympathy for Chris, understanding, a low anger though she can pinpoint the target. Maybe the people responsible. And maybe, with all the skills Ginia has and the ones that were lacking, they were meant to work together.

It takes a few minutes before a reply comes back in.]

I'm sorry. I know it sounds hollow, but I'm sorry you went through that.

When I first arrived, I was really good at fighting and killing and not much else. I was pretty useless and a mess my first month. Maybe first two months. I've killed people here. Hurt a lot of others. It's what I'm good at.

I don't know what I've done when I was alive. I assume it wasn't great, but it's all speculation. It's only recently I learned I could do more. Be more than what [Ginia pauses as she realizes what she's written, deletes the word and begins typing again.] who I am.

So I think I get it. I think I've learned it's important to learn from the past, but move forward too. To keep trying.

I think you're doing fine.

[None of that really surprises Chris much. Not after what she saw of Ginia's memories.]

... It sounds like there's a lot we have in common.

Maybe our meeting each other like this and becoming partners wasn't an accident. Fate's kind of a silly thing to believe in, but. Sometimes you can't think of any other explanation when things like this work out.

I guess so.

There's a superstition that if a shinki's vessel form fits their god, it's a sign of compatibility.

I don't know if I believe in fate. I think I hate the idea things were meant to be a certain way. But this worked out pretty well.

Yeah. I prefer making my own fate... even if that doesn't really make sense, in the end.

But yeah, it worked out pretty well.
