[It had taken Shun a long time to decide whether to post this at all, and an even longer time as to whether he should bother screening it from Ren. He knows in theory these sorts of things are supposed to be a surprise, but he doesn't think Ren would mind too much if it wasn't.

At the same time, he doesn't really want to settle for what he "won't mind too much". Which is why he's here at all despite the fact that he knows half the Far Shore is probably going to be standing in line to give him (however lighthearted) shit for it.]

I'm organising a gathering on the 12th for a friend's birthday. I don't know enough about who Ren knows to have messaged people privately, but if you're friends with him or Eric, then consider yourself allowed to come. Or if I've told you about him and you want to meet him, or I know you well enough to know you're not going to ruin things. And I mean actually know you, before any idiots who think meeting someone twice is the same thing as knowing them say anything.

It'll be at Koishikawa Korakuen Garden at around noon that day, but before that I could use a couple of people who know more about how to organise this sort of celebratory thing than I do. Or know more about making frivolous sweet food or whatever else. This isn't exactly something I've done before.

[There's a map reference at the bottom for Koishikawa Korakuen - a garden towards the north of Tokyo, near Iidabashi and Korakuen Stations - as well as the specific area of the garden to meet.

Considering when Archer made an offer about it the other day he didn't just say cake, I'm assuming it's not some ridiculous transgression to have things other than cake at a birthday.

I'm pretty sure cake is popular since it's easy to make in large batches and you can make almost any combination of flavors.

Maybe, but I was thinking about coffee cake or something. Seemed appropriate, and it shouldn't be as sweet as a regular cake.

[Shun knows Ren well enough to know that he's probably not going to be completely happy with something Shun put together if Shun doesn't want to eat any part of it himself.]

Uh huh ┐(´-｀)┌ So what type of stuff does Ren-san like? What kind of food? Desserts? Themes?

He's not picky, but for food I know he likes fruit and fruit flavoured things, and coffee and tea. And a lot of sweets, so that part shouldn't be hard. [They could probably even get away with having pancakes or something as the actual food content, knowing him...]

If you're talking about themes as in theming the gathering, it's a picnic, so there's not much you can do with that.

Uh, yeah there is. We could do a traditional Japanese type of picnic, or go more Western. We'd either be packing bentos or baskets. If there are trees we could put up some decorations if he likes things festive.

We could go for tarts for dessert. Sandwiches would go well with that and coffee or tea. We can do both savory and sweet with sandwiches too.

Two options isn't much. I don't think he has a preference, but Japanese would fit the location better. And it's at a garden, so obviously there are trees, but somewhere like that isn't likely to let anyone hang things up. Decorations would have to be ground level, otherwise we're going to get Near Shore people noticing.

Sounds like that would work well enough. Or pastries or something if anyone has a decent idea of how to make those.

Let me talk to Archer about baking, I'm sure he knows how to make pastries or something. Otherwise I knew a few good bakeries on the Near Shore I could pick up a few things from.

He offered something about desserts earlier in the week, I just don't want to put the whole thing on him. I can probably cook something like that with a recipe, I just need people who can taste test, because that's the part I can't do.

[Especially with things that include sugar. Give him instructions and he knows plenty enough about cooking to follow them, but he won't be able to tell if it's good or not until someone else tries it.]

Very little of one. And sweet things make me gag. Pastries shouldn't be an issue for that, but cake or actual sweets definitely would be.

What does Ren like? Can't say I've really met him, but I figure I should bring a present anyway.

He likes flowers and a few kinds of animals - cats, dragons, and owls are the ones I've actually seen him around. He seems to like things he can use that are shaped like those, since he has owl-shaped cups and that sort of thing.

[He could write a longer list, but he figures if he writes everyone a relatively different thing then he won't have to worry about people getting the same sort of present.]

If you want a relatively straightforward option, he wears black and silver bracelets and necklaces most of the time, so you could just get him something like that. Or something cat-shaped.

I've had a few offers for that already, but you can help me with it if you want. It's not like you can do it at Ren's temple, and anything sweet I'm not going to be able to test as I go anyway.

I'd say I have enough help for the food part, but if Kusanagi wants something to do with this then I'm not going to turn him down, considering he's your friend.

Have you put any thought into decorations or other food offerings? Maybe friends could bring a dish for a potluck, if you don't have time to cook for a gathering.

I'm working on food, and I've got a few people who seem interested in helping. I can manage some of it, but foods people expect for things like this aren't really my strong point.

[Shun is a very pragmatic cook, as in he tends to make broad meals meant to last a long time. While he has branched out a bit in his time here, he's only very rarely made sweets or even sweet food, and the former only with help.]

I doubt decorations will work well for where it's going to be. Public gardens don't like that sort of thing.

Some simpler fare would go well with the expected sweets--like rice balls with filling, or things of the like.

[ Ryoma is handy in the kitchen; not particularly fancy or anything resembling good at baking, but he makes hearty foods when you stick him in the mess hall and doesn't put a pure lump of salt in the middle of a rice ball when he's trying to show someone how it's done. On the other hand, he thinks sandwiches are god-like. He's a dude. ]

That's true. I've seen small things, like ribbons that hang from the trees until after the gathering, or colorful lamps that turn practical as the day winds down, but that all depends on how much effort you want to spend.

Chinatsu suggested a Japanese-style picnic already, so onigiri would fit well enough with that. I can manage that by myself as well.

I'll have to check over the area again and see what would actually work. I'd rather not leave any traces after we leave, but I wouldn't have put this post up if I wasn't trying to put some effort in.

That's true, but you also said you were looking for a couple people who knew more about organizing parties than you do. You don't strike me as the type to have much experience at all in party planning, or baking for that matter. It's not terribly hard to learn. What kind of cake were you thinking of having?
