Because that seemed like a way to 'celebrate' without having a big party with a lot of people. It sounded like you didn't want a party, so being by yourself seemed like the natural opposite of that, while still having a good time doing something you might not do any other day of the year. To make your birthday special.

Well... my opinion is that it shouldn't matter! I don't remember my birthday or anything, but I've remembered other important things about my life that I think are just as important as the day your birthday happens to fall on.

We only get blighted when someone else tells us something we didn't remember on our own first. That's what I heard and it's held up for me so far.
