I think that wishes are kept more to yourself and not necessarily directed towards a god or other entity that is capable of assisting you. Most often, wishes are simplistic and focus more on frivolous, personal desires, where as prayers are pleas to receive help for real life issues that you are incapable of remedying yourself.
