Hello to whomever might be reading this. My given name is Lara, and I am the current incarnation of Athena.


I've gathered I am not the first to bear her name, and I'd be interested in learning more about my predecessor. What sort of god was he/she? As I've begun settling into her temple here, I've found quite a lot of things that they probably left behind, and I also thought that perhaps it would be right to return them if any were on loan.

And I would also like to ask about the community's feelings on something. Truth be told, I've only recently begun to accept that the supernatural is real and there might be a higher power(s) at work. At least, until I woke up here and was hit in the face with it. It's a lot to absorb.

I'm feeling a touch overwhelmed and I'd like to know what role you believe a god should play. I've my own ideas, naturally, but I'm curious what others think. Do you want to live up to the legends of who came before? Do you want to change those legends into something else? Or is there something else you believe about divinity? I'm curious, so please, let me know your thoughts. It may help me better sort out my own.

[Hakkai punches the number into his own phone, strolling outside the school as he types. It's a few minutes before he settles back against a wall and puts the call through.

His voice is quiet, a little roughened by all the tile dust he's been breathing, when she picks up.]

i'd still love to hear more stories if you're ever up for it sometime. and if you know that much about mythologies than you're gonna be just fine around here!

you know, there's always all these temple ruins all over the heavens. you up for checking one out with me and some friends sometime? there's got to be something interesting to find.

I mean, prayers are one thing. But wouldn't it be more helpful if we were more proactive, and made it so most prayers weren't necessary? I'd call that a higher calling.

It's no trouble at all, Hakkai. I understand completely. Believe me, after the last few years this is relatively normal.

[She lets out a breath, and there's the sound of springs as she flops down on a couch.]

I know. I couldn't do it. I can barely look after myself sometimes.

We'll see though, but I doubt I can get sick of someone so enthusiastic.

Sure, catch me sometime and we can have tea. I'm always happy to talk about history and mythology. Sounds relevant here.

And yes, absolutely. That's exactly what I do at home, and if there's a way to do that here then I want to be a part of it.

You've got ambition, I'll give you that.

I think you'll quickly find some prayers to be at odds with one another. There's a saying about how 'you can't please all of the people all of the time' for a reason..

In any event, you're right, but what's to say finding a way to make it so the vast majority of prayers are never necessary is too much?

Okay, Croft, I'll assume you're just ambitious.

How much do you know about Maslow's hierarchy of needs, the working poor, and the perception of socialism across the world?

I'm familiar enough with the concepts and theories, though I'd hardly be able to debate them in open forum. I was an anthropology and archaeology student, I only studied sociology and politics in electives. And only in the context of the United Kingdom.

But if that's what you're thinking, would a divine hand not be able to provide aid with at least the first two steps of the pyramid? Physiological requirements and Safety shouldn't be that difficult for a truly almighty Heaven. Unless of course there's some secret currency required to make interference happen. A tax on deeds?

The soulless ones can be a bit lacking from what I hear. Especially when it comes to fighting certain monsters in this place.

I find them suspicious.

Mine seems to work well enough. It's an ax, and I know my way around that, at least.

But what is suspicious about them?

There are some things that an ax cannot cut through. If you were facing any of my kind, it would not even scratch us.

As I said, I am a Greeed. I can feel the wants and needs of all living things. From plants to animals to humans, the stronger the want, the more I can taste it.

They have none. So I find that suspicious.

On the contrary, battlefield medicine is of vital importance in this day and age—what with the ayakashi causing all this trouble.

that does make sense though. Maybe it's the whole 'soulless' part.

Hopefully you'll never need to be put in my care. I'm not terribly familiar with anesthetics, so my treatments are a little rough unless certain herbs are available.

But if you're interested in learning more, I'd be happy to teach what I can.

there's always talks around here about a war that happened a long time ago and a lot of us don't really know too much about amaterasu or why we're all here. so maybe we can find something in those old places. i'll let you know when we've scouted one out!

Alright so we're in business for a casual conversation.

[Which is a joke, to him. They're obviously dealing with quite a bit more than that.]

I was mainly going to point out that the base needs of people really don't stop at base needs, because where will it come from? I certainly can't make a house appear out of nowhere, and any influence I had to make that happen would fade with time until the reality of 'where did this house come from?' would hit.

So no, I don't think that there's a tax on deeds, but a divine hand can only influence very small spheres. A drop in the bucket when it comes to changing the perception of people. Because if a prayer gets answered, the neighbor who was already well off starts to wonder why they don't get their own prayers answered too. There's a jealousy built in there, even though the neighbor wasn't struggling as much as the person whose prayer we answered.
