Can Shinki get sick?

[ A seemingly simple question, but one that's been clawing at him for days. The symptoms have become too painful to ignore, so he bites his tongue and seeks answers because unknown to him, his bloodlust has begun to manifest. ]

[She stops advancing, and holds her hands up where he can see them. He doesn't seem angry so much as... nervous. But why?]

Hey, it's okay. It's fine. I never got sick even before I became a goddess. I've got a good constitution.

[That much is true. And she spent a lot of time around a certain sickly best friend, so she's confident in her immune system at least.]

So let's start with 'how are you feeling right now' and go from there. Er, how are you feeling right now?

It's because you're a goddess.

I spoke to others. I know what I have.

[ At least, he thinks he does. ]

Okay, that's a good start. What is it?

[She takes another careful step forward. If it is something like blight, being close to him won't matter. As long as she doesn't touch the blight she'll be fine.]

[ Hard eyes snap to her at that single step. ]

Blight.

Seriously?

[She relaxes a little. She's dealt with blight before, so this should be no problem.]

In that case I know how to fix it. I had a run in with a nasty ayakashi once and I got a touch of that myself. As long as you don't leave it for too long it's an easy fix.

[Although... there were no symptoms of hunger or thirst. Just pain. So is that really what he has?]

Can I see the mark?

[ Without a word, he pulls down the collar of his shirt to show her his Hunter tattoo. If she can feel magic, she'll notice there's a dark spell on the mark. ]

[She can't, but it hardly matters. She steps up for a closer look, and after a minute, shakes her head.]

That isn't blight.

[She's not sure whether to be relieved or concerned yet.]

Blight looks more like a bruise that slowly get bigger and bigger.

[ His eyes narrow at her approach. ]

[ He's about to tell her to back off when she explains the situation making his brows crease in confusion. He didn't understand... if it wasn't Blight then---

And then he remembered the words of one of the Shinki he'd spoken too.... and immediately backed off. He turned his back to her, his hands clenching at his sides as he realized he'd been right... what he'd said about him... about what he was...

In a barely, controlled voice, strained at the edges he spoke a singular word: ]

Leave.

[Hiyoko is more than a little taken aback by the sudden shift in tone. If it wasn't blight then what did he have? And why was he still worried about her catching it?

At least, she assumes that's what he's worried about. She raises her hands again, trying to keep things as calm as possible.]

What's wrong? It's not blight, so I probably can't catch whatever it is. We just have to figure this out.

I said leave!

[ A sharp rebuttal.]

[The word is still quiet, but firm.]

I'm not leaving when you're so obviously not okay. I came all this way to help and that's what I'm gonna do.

No one asked you too.

[ She may be stubborn but Zero has been denying people's help since he was old enough to walk, so he's got some years on her there. ]

I don't want you here.

Nope. I decided to help out a friend all on my own.

[She frowns and puts her hands on her hips.]

And fine, you don't want me here. But I am here. And I kind of think you need somebirdie right now.

Don't.

[ His teeth clench as he feels the onslaught of hunger pangs claw at his throat. He's taunt, like a chord of steel ready to snap as it rides through his system. They were becoming more and more frequent with each passing day, and he was barely able to keep himself under control as it stood. This was mild in comparison some others. This, he could handle. It didn't make him stagger, didn't force him to his knees. It was fine. He could handle it. When it subsides, seconds later, he lets out a shaky breath as his shoulders lose some of their tension. ]

You can't help me.

How do you know? You won't even let me try...

[She can see how he tenses up and definitely gets the sense that something in him being pushed to the limit. Like he's about to snap or break. But she isn't quite sure what it all means.

Whatever it is, it also pings her well honed instincts into high alert. This is the feeling she gets when there's a large predator near her cave, or when Dr. Iwamine enters the room. The feeling of 'you are doing something dangerous.' But he still doesn't look dangerous. And he obviously needs help. She can't ignore that.]

Give me a chance.

[ His eyes very slowly, lock on her, his predator instincts still at the edging near the surface. ]

I don't know yet. But we've already ruled out blight. So if you just tell some more specifics about your symptoms maybe we can figure out how to help you.

[She risks another small step forward and a tiny smile.]

Two heads are better than one, you know?

[ She was stubborn, more so than what he'd given her credit for, but he couldn't handle her presence, not when the affliction hit him in full force, so he made his stance to drive her away once and for all. ]

Symptoms.

[ He moved forward then, a predator stalking it's prey, stopping only when he was in front of her. ]

You already know them, but not the extent of them.

[Now she's the one who tenses, and it's only her willpower that keeps her feet in place. Keeping her voice carefully even and her eyes on his, she speaks again.]

Okay. Then what is the extent of them?

I want to rip out your throat.

[ A blunt statement, made with little inflection in tone or meaning. ]

[Of all the things she expected to hear, that didn't exactly top the list. Heck, it didn't even make the list.

The first thing she can think to say is 'huh?' Followed closely by 'What the heck!?!' But neither of those are helpful. And they sort of get stuck in her throat anyway.

She swallows nervously and tries to stay brave as she asks the only question that really matters now.]

Wh- why?!?

[ He doesn't answer, instead he moves beside her, eyes forward. ]

Don't come looking for me.

[ He steps forward. ]

I'll pluck out your wings.

[ A warning delivered in a soft tone, before he walks away, disappearing into the forest. ]

[She turns to watch him go, more than a bit bewildered by the exchange. What the heck had all that been about? He has some kind of disease or condition that makes him violent? Is that what he was trying to say?

But if so? All the more reason to not leave him alone.]

Geez, you don't have to be a jerk about it...

[She mutters that to herself before calling after him.]

My offer still stands! If you need help, just call me or come to my temple okay?

[But she'll let him go for now. Pushing too hard seems like a bad idea.]
