[The feed turned on just in time to catch Mai in another sneeze. Nothing overly dramatic or explosive, but strong enough and with a subsequent slow recovery time to indicate this was not the first. And she was no expecting it to be the last.]

Ugh...I'm sorry.

[Taking a deep breath, she sat back and looked directly into the camera with a slightly glassy stare. Hints of red on her nose and cheeks that--for once--didn't come from blushing. At least, not the usually blushing from her.]

One of the kindergartners I was trying to answer a prayer for a while back must have gotten me sick. [At least, that was the closest to an explanation she'd managed to come up with.] I didn't even know I could still get sick, but...it's been weeks, and I only feel slightly better.

Does anybody know if cold medicine works on gods?

[That seemed to be the end of her line of questioning...except, at the last possible minute...one final thought occured to her. A thought that promptly caused her to frown.]

Oh, and whoever thought to leave that package on my Temple doorstep? Not funny.

[Trunks is just off-screen, but nearby with his arms crossed and not...well, he's not glaring exactly. But he is giving Mai a not-happy look and watching her as she's making the post.]

You do know, with it being this long, I'm going to Hakkai's for medicine right? Even if normal cold stuff doesn't work, his should, considering he's a god.

[Someone is mother-henning at his Goddess.]

I want you sitting down though, and resting again, before I do that. You'll make it worse if you're not careful.

[It was, perhaps, a testament to the very nature of their relationship that Mai already knew the expression on his face without having to look at him. Well enough for her to appear mostly unaffected by both it as well as the words that followed.]

If that's what you want, I won't stop you. [She waved a dismissive hand in the air--dismissing the "argument", not him. Even at her weariest, she wouldn't do that.] And I've been resting all day. I feel like--

[She paused for a yawn before continuing.]

--the walls of my own Temple are closing in on me.

[....alright, that was a fair point. He didn't exactly like being cooped up either. There's a sigh, and while he's still wearing that unhappy look, it's also sympathetic instead of not-quite-glaring.]

...What about if I take you to Hakkai's instead then? It'll get you out of the temple, and he can see about helping you shake this thing faster?

[Mai...couldn't think of a reason to protest that.]

Alright.

Just give me a minute to change and we'll head out. Should you let him know we're coming?

[Oh good, she's not protesting. That makes him relax some more, which is fairly obvious.]

I'll give him a quick call while you change, alright?

[Which he'll pull out his phone to do right then. Locking and calling Li Tieguai...]

Hakkai, are you at your temple? I may need your help with Mai, as she's still got a lingering cold of some kind.

[Hakkai picks up, audio only.]

Hello? -- Oh, Trunks. I'm out at the moment, but I can meet you there. What time?

As soon as is reasonable? Mai's had some kind of lingering cold for about a month. I'd have you come here, but she's been feeling cooped up.

[Audio is fine, as Trunks is still keeping his eye out for when Mai comes back and is ready to go.]

Hmm, all right. It doesn't sound like it's an emergency, if it's been hanging around for a month, but I can be back at my temple in fifteen minutes. With time to put away the groceries--

-- in any case! I'll see you both then?

That's perfect. If it was an emergency, I'd have called you sooner, or shown up on your doorstep with her already. Goddess she may be--but she is my Goddess and I want her healthy and safe.

[He is serious, while also there is a clear smile in his voice.]

[Time to go see if Mai's ready to leave. The temples weren't that far away, but checking up on her wasn't a bad thing.]

[As it so happened, Mai returned a moment later. Dressed in her usual casual outfit, hair brushed and face freshly scrubbed.]

I heard the tail end of that. He's home, I take it?

He will be by the time we get there.

[Phone going in his pocket, she's being studied again. Before Trunks is nodding; even if she looks like she's feeling better, he will make sure Hakkai knows she has been feeling sick. Even if Mai tries to hide it.]

Up for walking it, or am I carrying you?

[Hakkai, meanwhile, takes the time to neaten up and put away the workbooks he'd been grading before heading back to his temple. Teleportation is a very convenient way to make sure he won't be too late; he appears on his own front steps, and waits there, squinting down the road to see if Trunks and his goddess are on their way.]

...you and Caster both, I swear...

[A low murmur that would, no doubt, reach his ears anyway. She even made a point of walking right by him and towards the entrance.]

I can walk.

[And walk, she would. Even if she felt a little winded by the end of the journey--more than usual. Something she attributed to the fact that she hadn't trained much in the last few weeks and thus was out of practice.]

[The I heard that. comment was all in his eyes, especially since Mai had made it obvious too that he would hear. Trunks just sighed, and moved to join her. Keeping pace, and alert without trying to be as overbearing.

He got it, really. He just didn't like seeing her under the weather and unhappy. Especially since she had a tendency to put everyone else first, and she needed to take care of herself too. And if she wouldn't, then it was his job to take care of her.

No doubt Hakkai will beat them to his temple, which is find and good. As they get in range, and Trunks locates the familiar silhouette, he'll wave in greeting and recognition. But they go at Mai's pace, and not hurrying otherwise.]

[Hakkai returns the wave from the steps of his temple, and heads down the street to meet them.]

Hello! Mai -- good evening. How are you feeling?

[There was a fleeting glance her shinki's way, and a strong urge to utter out some sarcastic quip....but Mai held her tongue and instead turned back to Hakkai with a more honest smile:]

Tired.

And hungry. But the kind of hungry where I know I want to eat something, but nothing seems very appetizing.

{Trunks caught that look, and is ignoring it. Honestly? He can relax a bit now, since Mai is hopefully going to get help from someone besides just herself (and her shinki) in case it IS something serious.]

It's an improvement, as her appetite has been non-existent otherwise. She's eaten, but it's been smaller portions than usual, along with very bland. Mostly we've been sticking more to hydration and rest.

Well, that sounds like she's on her way to recovery, then.

[He sends Mai a tiny, tiny wink. Overprotective shinki, hmm...]

But I can get her some medicine to improve energy and speed her recovery.

[Hakkai, you have no idea.]

Told you. [A slightly confident smirk was sent Trunks' way, before nodding appreciatively at Hakkai's offer.] That would be perfect. Thank you.

[Have an eye-roll Mai, but Trunks is trying to hide his smile.]

That does sound like it'll help a lot, thanks Hakkai.

[There's a side glance to his goddess, and that smile is borderlining-smirk. Crossing his arms, albeit amused at the whole thing.]

Improving her energy will probably do wonders, as she keeps getting just better enough to think she's fully well, and then overdoes it. Which undoes that progress.

[Mai was not so good at sitting still sometimes. Then again, neither was her shinki.]

She's too much aware of her duty and responsibilities--but it is one of the reasons I believe in her.

I think she's not the only one who overdoes it sometimes -- is she? [He glances at Trunks, teasing, and then bows his head and gestures to a few chairs.]

Why don't the two of you wait here on the porch? I already have the medicine you'll need concocted, so I can bring it right out.

[There may have been a satisfied smirk at his comment, but she gracefully refrained from saying anything before he went back inside.]

[And then, once she thought he was out of earshot--]

See? It's not just me who thinks that.

[Sorry Mai, Trunks is deliberately playing dumb. Still with that half-smirk (albeit amused) of his own, and his arms crossed.]

Hmm? I'm sure I have no clue what you're talking about.

[But he accepts the teasing good-naturedly at least--it's seen in his eyes.]

I'm sure you don't.

[Spoken in an I-know-you-know tone. Completely with side-eye and a confident smile. And little else, as she turned back to wait for Hakkai's return.]

[Hakkai doesn't leave them to wait too long. A few minutes later, he returns with a neatly folded paper packet in one hand, and holds it out to Mai.]

Just a pinch of this in hot water, twice a day -- morning and night. Don't mind the smell, it's really quite good for you!

[The smell -- a faint ghost of which is emanating from the package -- is earthy and a little rancid, reminiscent of compost.]

It tastes a little better if you mix it with tea instead of water.
